The Shining - 8 Bit by CineFix

I am all for 8 bit conversions of anything... 8 bit is a lifestyle, a reminder of an era far gone. But it even cooler when the thing being 8 bit-ified is a classic movie, especially a classic movie that I love! The Shining is one of my favorite Kubrick films, and not because it is so perfect in its adaption of the book or because it is so great... it is just because it holds a special place in my heart. Jack Nicholson is just so creep-tastic as Jack Torreance, and Shelley Duvall is a perfect victim. The little kid is spooky as fuck... and Scatman Cruthers is just icing on the already delicious cake. So when I got to see this awesome 8 bit rendition of The Shining done by CineFix, I was sitting on the edge of my seat. Crazy!!!! Thanks to Tommy Lombardozzi for sharing this. We were lucky enough to get a Friday the 13th NES game and a Texas Chainsaw Massacre Atari game... god I wish this one were real! Check it out after the jump...

The Movies Of Stanley Kubrick

Of all of these, my favorites are Dr. Strangelove and the first half of Full Metal Jacket.  I have to admit that I have never seen The Shining and got through about ten minutes of Eyes Wide Shut. Clockwork Orange freaks the hell out of me still but so did the novel it's based on. Barry Lyndon did nothing for me because I always have hated Ryan O'Neil. 2001? I hate to say I needed to see 2010 to fully get what was going on which made A Space Odyssey so much more enjoyable to watch the second or third time around.

Dr. Sleep, Stephen King's New Novel, Gets It's First Cover...

... In other news, I just banged my head on my coffee table because I momentarily collapsed due to a combination of excitement and pure joy. Dr. Sleep is the sequel that nobody thought would ever happen, a telling of the future tales of Danny Torrance aka the little boy in The Shining. He is all grown up and having quite a rough go of it after his events at the Overlook Hotel, and now he is using his powers of 'shining' to help elderly patients in a nursing home. But when he meets a 12 year old boy with the strongest 'shining' powers Danny has ever seen, things start spiraling out of control. Throw in a group of supernatural parasites called The True Knot who travel around the country torturing and stealing the 'shining' powers of youths they encounter to feed their immortality, and you have one pretty awesome setup for a story. King still writes some winners (while his older books are superb, recent additions to the Dark Tower series and books like The Dome have gotten great reviews. ) and I have been anticipating this book since I first heard about King reading excerpts of it some time last year (we covered it... CCD Baby!). The book is coming out on September 24th, and is already available for pre-order on Amazon for an extremely discounted price of $15 for the hardcover. The cover of the book has also been released, and its surreal nature is fantastic in setting up this story. My order is already in. How do you feel about this kinda of 'semi-sequel' to a seminal classic? Tell me in the comments in the section below....

The Shining by Fro Design

There is no hiding the fact that I am a huge Stanley Kubrick fanboy. I love all of his movies, especially his collaborations with my favorite actor Peter Sellers. But one of my favorite films of his has to be his foray into the horror genre with his adaption of Stephen King's The Shining. The creepiness of the forest location in the movie is just such a huge part of the why the film is so dark & ominous, so it is no real surprise that Fro Designs chose The Overlook Hotel as the centerpiece for their newest poster. There are only 150 of these being printed, and they run a mere 45.00 dollars. Click here to grab one of them right away, cause once they are gone, they are gone. A great new poster for and old classic movie! Click after the jump to see the poster in all its glory....

Rated G - An Animated Art Show By Justin White

Gallery 1988 is back at it again... well, they have been back at it since November 16th and I am just a bit late to the party. Justin White is running an art show at the Gallery entitled 'Rated G' in which he imagines some of his favorite movies as if they were animated classics. There is only problem... these are not the kind of movies that lend themselves to the animated format. They are gore filled, action induced, crazy ass cult flicks that look even freakier when they are animated. You can see most of the art work and even purchase some of the original pieces and prints from the show by clicking here, and you can see my faves after the jump. This is a world I would love to live in...

Room 237: A Peak Into The Hidden Meanings From Kubrick's 'The Shining'

I have been hearing about this documentary 'Room 237' for almost 2 years. It doesn't take much to get me to watch a film in general, but with as exciting a premise that this film has there is NO WAY I could possibly resist. The film delves into the mysteries & hidden meanings of Kubrick's The Shining, promising to change the way you view the classic film forever. The trailer doesn't offer much in the way of footage, but it certainly does build the tension by using Kubrick-esque music and the signature carpet from The Overlook hotel. Even though this film faced some complications in therms of getting a release, it is now scheduled for a 2013 release. I will be on the lookout, that is for sure... check out the trailer after the jump...

The Overlook Hotel by Mark Maddox

Here is a great piece of fan art from an artist by the name of Mark Maddox. He portrays Jack Torrence (as played by Jack Nicholson) from the Kubrick classic The Shining. This is one of my all time favorite films and probably one of the spookiest. The key images from the film are burned into the mind of any person who has seen the film. Yet somehow Maddox brings us a fresh take on the films many character and makes him even spookier. Wow... just wow. You can see the full size piece after the jump...

'The Shining' Sculptures May Be Creepy Than The Original People In The Movie... Maybe!!!

The Shining is one of the creepiest movies ever created, a pure horror classic from the genius mind of Stanley Kubrick. It is one of the first horror movies to cross over to the mainstream and is always on the top of peoples 'Greatest Horror Movies...' lists. One of the things that makes it so spooky for me has to be the look of the characters. When the film starts the three members of the Torrance family seem to be pretty normal... and way I say normal I mean in appearance as well as mental state. But as they spend more and more time at the Overlook Hotel the family begins to unravel in both of those aspects. By the end of   the film the characters look horrific and make it even harder for us to ignore the traumatic experiences they have just gone through... Enter sculpture Clare Monaghan and her ability to recreate this haggard look of the Torrances from the end of the film in her busts. These are just so detailed and weird. Great find by the gang over at Super Punch. You can see detailed pictures of each individual bust after the jump...

Even Bad Guys Have To Get Old....

As a big horror fan I am constantly looking for websites that focus on the genre to read. I was always a fan of Bloody Disgusting, but they have gotten a bit corporate and big for their britches. A few years back I stumbled upon Freddy In Space, a cool blog run by a guy named Johnny. There was just something about the blog and the way he ran it that remind me alot of what we are trying to do here at CCD.... just talk about stuff we love and maybe score some free shit from companies for reviewing their stuff. Then I found out that Johnny was a fellow NYer and that was enough for me. We have become friends through meet ups at Comic Con and sharing memorabilia, and I am still a very big fan of his blog. Go check it out!!! Anyway, Johnny featured photographer Fredrico Chisea works in which Chisea shows us what it will be like when the villains we love grow old. THese guys may not seem like much of a threat anymore, but I bet they still go a bit of bad ass left in em. Check out the photo series after the jump...

Stephen King Reads From 'Dr. Sleep', His Sequel To 'The Shining'... I Promptly Faint & Bash My Head On My Coffee Table!!!

The Shining is without a doubt Stephen king's most famous work. That is not belittling his other works... this guy has sold more books than Jesus himself. But due to the fact that Stanley Kubrick decided to adapt the novel for a movie (albeit by changing tons of shit from King's original novel and Jack Nicholson's famous "Here's Johnny!!!" axe wielding portrayal of Jack Torrance) and it became wildly popular, it has always been regarded as the touchstone of King's literary works. Last year King announced a new book, entitled 'Dr. Sleep', which is a legitimate sequel to The Shining. I almost fainted at the thought of the return of Danny Torrance... where would King take this character with the psychic ability to "Shine"? Well, King is starting to do public readings from the novel in preparation of it's release (no official release date as of yet, but I'm assuming its somewhere near the end of 2012-beginning of 2013) and somebody cell phone cam-ed him reading the first chapter of the book. I almost fainted...   This one sounds great!!! Catch the clip & book synopsis after the jump and tell me what you think about this upcoming sequel project.....

Visit 'The Shining' Set Through The Eyes Of Stanley Kubrick

My boy Johnny Boots over at Freddy In Space runs one of the coolest blogs on the 'Net. He is always posting up awesome horror related stuff and sending me cool ass packages, and that's why I love him. But this time he has out done himself. He located a retro commercial from a British TV channel promoting an upcoming Stanley Kubrick marathon, and it is freaking awesome. It is a tour of the set of 'The Shining' as seen through Kubrick's eyes. This one is amazing. Check out the full video after the jump... and make sure you check out Freddy In Space!!!

A to Z Blogging Challenge - Day #18 - Letter R - Redrum

I will always love Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece 'The Shining' and thought that would be a great topic for my 'R' post. I love the scene when Danny scribbles "Redrum" on the wall and repeats it over and over again to his mother as she tries to figure out what it means. Once she does, here come Jack Nicholson with that axe... and the rest is movie history!!! Enjoy these 5 pieces of 'Redrum' Deviant Art and make sure you click the links to see the artists portfolios... they are great!

My 3 Favorite Scary Movies Of All Time: Kate Jones Edition

Ever since that scene in Scream where Ghostface asks Ms Barrymore that same question people have been asking each other it with regularity. Actually, I'm pretty sure they have been asking each other that since the beginning of film itself. Scary movies are just so easy to talk about... and so easy to form an opinion of. For many reasons they are the genre of movies that you can point to and say "Yup, these are the ones I LOVE!!!" In honor of CCD's 1st annual All Horror Week, we decided to highlight some of our contributors and friends 3 favorite scary/horror movies of all time. These may not be the best, but they are each person's FAVORITE, so these lists should be quite fun. Here we go!

Our next contributor to step up to the plate is Kate Jones, whose True Bloody Love (True Blood) & Reality Check (Reality TV) recap columns keep everybody in the loop on whats going on. Since True Blood is outta season right now, we are waiting for Mrs. Jones to get a new obsession so we can be privy to some more of her excellent insights. One thing she won't be writing about will be horror movies, because she F'n hates scary movies!!! Despite the fact that she is not a huge horror fan (at all), she as a good sport and participated anyway. With no further ado, I present My 3 Favorite Scary Movies Of All Time: Kate Jones Edition!!!

Se7en (1995) - Hands down, one of the best movies I have EVER seen. Incredible acting, tons of visual grossness and an incredible storyline. I saw this at about the same time as Usual Suspects and was completely amazed by all things Kevin Spacey after that. Just total awesomeness...and creepiness.

The Shining (1980) - Nothing is creepier than the idea that a normal guy could go completely bonkers and try to kill the people he loves the most. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy...

The Ring (2002) -  Wow... Kids are freaky! That girl was DAMN scary. I think that might have actually been the last scary movie I saw just based on that crazy girl climbing out of the television at the end of the movie. Also, my friends ex boyfriend calling my house phone just as the movie finished MAY have damaged me.

Kubrick Art... 'Nuff Said!!!

I was alerted to this artshow that is going on out in Cali sometime last week, but I wanted to really take a look at the art before I posted anything about it. Boy am I glad I got around to it. Artist Carlos Ramos really went above and beyond to rep the work of the man who I believe is the greatest film director of all time, Stanley Kubrick. The show is taking place at the Copro Gallery and I wish I could get out there before August 3rd... but all my East Coast peeps are going to have to settle for a sneak preview here. Click "Read More" to see the rest. Hope you guys enjoy. Let me know what you think of the pictures in the comment
section, will ya???
