'Required Reading 2013' Art Show at Gallery 1988

If there is one thing I love perusing on the Internet it has to be all of the art shows that galleries around the country are having... specifically the pop culture themed shows that galleries are having. The fact that post the works on the Net means that no matter how far away the gallery may be and despite the fact that I don't get to see works in person I still have access to them. The themes of the shows may vary, but no matter what the pieces always excite me. Gallery 1988 is one of the bets in the biz... but even they are always looking to up the ante on a upcoming shows theme. So for one of their most recent shows, 'Required Reading 2013', they decided to get away from pop culture movies, TV and comics and delve into the world of classic literature. A bold and interesting move that I was sure would generate some killer pieces. The show is running at Gallery 1988 West from December 6th through the 22nd. Rated G - An Animated Art Show By Justin White

Gallery 1988 is back at it again... well, they have been back at it since November 16th and I am just a bit late to the party. Justin White is running an art show at the Gallery entitled 'Rated G' in which he imagines some of his favorite movies as if they were animated classics. There is only problem... these are not the kind of movies that lend themselves to the animated format. They are gore filled, action induced, crazy ass cult flicks that look even freakier when they are animated. Around The World In 80's Daze With Tom Whalen & Dave Perillo

Gallery 1988 is doing God's Work... there is no other way to state what is going on at the Cali art space. These dudes continue to curate beautiful shows highlighting pop art and the coolest pieces that are being posted about all over the Internet by people like me. For the next few weeks Gallery 1988 is running a show called "Around The World In 80's Days", a show highlighting 80's movie travel locations by Tom Whalen & Dave Perillo. Whalen is one of my favorite artists in the game & Perillo is no slouch, so the pieces are fantastic. My favorite has to be the ad for Falkor Air. So great. The 'Step Brothers' 4th Anniversary Art Show @ Gallery 1988

The gang over at Gallery 1988 are just awesome at picking topics for their art shows. Hot off the closing of their wildly successful Crazy 4 Cult: NYC show, we are getting a 4th anniversary art show in honor off 'Step Brothers'. Yup, I just typed that... 4th anniversary. How cool is that? They ain't even waiting for the 5th anniversary yo... it's Boats and Hoes all the way at Venice Beach location. I love this movie more and more... Gallery 1988 Presents Crazy 4 Cult In NYC... And CCD Was There!!!

The CCD crew decided to venture into Manhattan and check out the Gallery 1988 art show Craxzy 4 Cult for ourselves on its opening night last week. It is a dope show, and my only knock on it was that it was in too small a space. People who were waiting to buy prints and pieces formed a line along one whole side of the gallery and prevented people from seeing that half of the show. But for the pieces that I did get a shot to see... all I can say is wow! There are some great pieces in the show, and I had to bust out the camera on my tablet to take some photos for all of you guys to see for yourself. It was crazy packed and hard to take pics, but I did my best. Not all of these will appear online (some are featured over at gallery 1988's website and many other sites like ours) so this might be the only chance you get to see it. Get Out & Support Gallery 1988's Crazy 4 Cult: New York Show... Now!!!

I have often admired the many zanny art show themes that are put forth by Gallery 1988 in California... but due to logistical locational limitations (say that three times fast!) , aka the gallery is in California & I live in New York, I have never been ale to get out and see one of their shows for myself. but all of that comes to an end tonight as I plan on attending the opening night at the first show in NYC today! The gallery is opening up a pop up store at 64 Ganservoort St tonight at 6pm and the show runs until September 1st. The pieces are leaking online and look amazing. CCD will be in the house tonight, so come down and meet up with the crew. Check out a few of the pieces I have seen online after the jump to kind of wet your beak and make sure you get out to this show at some point so that we get more of these satellite shows in the future...

Shaun of Rage by Aled Lewis

I am getting super pumped up for the upcoming Crazy 4 Cult show here in NYC. The Gallery 1988 show opens this Thursday at the Gallery 1988 pop up shop and will run until September 1st. These shows always feature amazing mashup pieces from some of the greatest artists in the game and blow my mind consistently. The first piece I am featuring from the show (pieces are already starting to leak online) comes from Aled Lewis (one of the best doing it right now) and is a mashup of the side scrolling fighting game classic Streets of Rage with Edgar Wright's awesome zombie thriller Shaun of the Dead. I love seeing Shaun and Ed kicking zombie ass outside of the Winchester Pub. Sick piece from a sick collection. Can't wait to see the show opening night on Thursday!!!! 'White Man's Birden' by Fro Design

There are not many people who like Minimalistic art much more than I do. Take a simple idea and make it interesting... yup, I'll take that over floating heads and 'splosions that seem to be populating posters these days. Take 'White Man's Birden', a minimalistic homage poster for Hitchcock's classic film 'The Birds' that was made for the Gallery 1988 Hitchcock show by Fro Designs. This one is for sale over at the Fro Design website for 50.00 bucks, which may seem steep but seems reasonable after considering they are only making 15 of them! More 2012 Comic Con Exclusives From Gallery 1988

As we sit on the precipice of San Diego Comic Con one more time, I am getting more and more aggravated by the amazing exclusives that are being offered to con goers. Getting in on the act next is Gallery 1988, the Cali based art mecca who constantly pushes the envelope with their awesome shows monthly. They have tapped artists New Flesh & Mark Englert to produce posters for two of the 80s best Sci Fi movies. New Flesh has created a poster based on The Last Starfighter (a truly underrated movie that most 80s babies like me adore) & Englert created a killer Aliens poster that features the scene when the Xenomorph is expelled by Ripley into space. Both of these poster are of very limited quantity & are only available at the con. Stop bye Gallery 1988 at booth #405. They also have other artists and exclusives appearing, so check them out. Gallery 1988 Brings Back The Garbage Pail Kids!!!

When I was a shorty I was absolutely enthralled by the sheer disgusting nature of 'Garbage Pail Kids' trading cards. These hideous creations often featured some creative name for a mutilated child that was accompanied by a corresponding illustration.  (Continued after the jump)

This one comes via Popped Culture (welcome back Jeremy!) and is part of the Gallery 1988 'I know you are, but what am I?' tribute show to Pee Wee Herman. Great mashup with the classic Beatles 'Abbey Road' album cover. Tequila!!!!

Save Ferris: The Ninetendo Game That Never Was

Check out this very cool Ferris Bueller's Day Off inspired Nintendo game from Joebot. He did a great job not only creating the artwork in an original N.E.S. style, but also created a box, game booklet, and cartridge to go along with it as well. Very cool. This is for the Gallery 1988 John Hughes tribute show that began on February 11th, and it is wonderful. Great job Joebot!!!

Gallery 1988 Celebrates Comedians Of All Kinds Through Art

Check out some of the cool original works of art that are being showcased (and sold!) over at Gallery 1988 for their "Is This Thing On?" art show. The show is meant to celebrate some of the great comedians throughout the years in very interesting ways. If you happen to be in the Melrose area of California, you can stop in and see this great art from Jan. 7th thru Jan. 29th. Gallery 1988 Presents: The 3G Art Show...

... and the three G's are: The Goonies, Gremlins, and Ghostbusters!!!

 Holy 80's baby flashbacks (KMG, Joey, Jeff, Fletch, and Tommy L, you are all welcome!!!) This awesome gallery outdoes itself time and time again and I wish I lived in L.A. to see some of their great shows. This particular show kicks off September 3rd and runs till September 22nd.
