It was a crazy event, and in the middle of it we just happened to record a live episode of the podcast with some very special guests! The CCD Podcast: Episode #82 - The Star Wars Art Show

CCD.NYC has been sponsoring live art shows around Brooklyn for the past year, and one of the places we got the inspiration to do those shows was from our good friend Joseph Milazzo. Milazzo is a talented musician and artist himself, and he has been putting together shows for years now. We liked his format of rotating artists in for each so and having a theme... so we kinda stole it and added the pop culture twist! So when Joe told us that his next show was going to be focusing on a Pop Culture phenomenon such as Star Wars we had to have him on the podcast to tell us all about it! The 15 pieces from the show will be on display on Saturday Dec 12th at 3 Jolly Pigeons bar in Bay Ridge (click here for details) all night, but listen to Jedi Rob chop it up with Joe and one of the other artists in the show Al Accettura as a bit of a sneak preview!!!

It could be music, movies, or TV... or anything else for that matter! So the ultimate podcast duo of Jedi Rob & Mike D sit down and scroll through all the properties that were hit on by the artists, previewing the show. Gallery Nucleus Presents: Heroes In A Half Shell - A Tribute To The 30th Anniversary of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I am always on the lookout for cool pop culture art shows that are held around the country... after all, other than Bottleneck Galleries in Brooklyn we have very few places in NYC that conduct shows of that nature. But through the magic of the Internet we not only get to view the pieces of these shows, but we have access to PURCHASE prints and original pieces of all this great stuff! Gallery Nucleus is located in Alhambra, California and is currently executing one hell of a show. It is called 'Heroes In A Half Shell' and is meant to pay tribute to the 30th Anniversary of our favorite crime fighting reptiles (yup, turtles are reptiles... why don't you go to science class!). On the cusp of the release of the new live action TMNT film, this show highlights all the classic characters as well as some of the rarer ones from the many iterations the property has been through (Fish Face seems abundantly more popular than he should be as a subject). There are over 30 artists in the show, and it also features sponsorship tie ins to the cartoon and IDW comics. There are giveaways, door prizes and the best part is that anyone that shows up in costume gets in free!!! The pieces vary in style and execution, and there are even some non-print pieces (a skate deck, stuffed animals, and scultures) to spice things up. Now that is one show I wish I lived on the Left Coast for!!! The show runs until August 3rd, but if you can't make it in then make sure you pop by the Gallery Nucleus webpage to peruse the art and maybe make some Turtle-Tastic purchases. Art Wars

Artists from David Bailey to Yinka Shonibare have appropriated the iconic Star Wars headgear for a new exhibition coming soon to London’s Saatchi Gallery as part of STRARTA art fair. Art Wars, featuring a tantalising array of variously soup-canned, crocheted and jewel-encrusted helmets, will run from 9 to 13 October... 

This theme for an art show has been seen and done before, but these are just so goo we had to share. I am really digging the weird choices some of the artists made to incorporate the designs into the trooper helmets. Great work...

'When the Lights Go Out' - An Glow In the Dark Inspired Art Show @ Bottleneck Galleries NYC

As a life long New Yorker it is my duty to share all kinds of cool shit happening in my city with the rest of my fellow nerds, geeks and pop culture lovers. Even though NY has its fair share of cool things going on, lots of other states have been leading the charge in terms of gallery's that primarily focus on pop culture themed shows. But Bottleneck Galleries in Williamsburg, Brooklyn is doing their best to change that, and they seem to be doing a better job as each show comes and goes. Following up artist Raid  71's awesome 'The Popular Face of NY' art show, we get a bit of experimentation from the Bottleneck crew with a glow-in-the-dark driven show called 'When the Lights Go Out'. When the pieces appear to the naked eye, they seem like cool pop culture pieces. But when the lights go down, those pieces drastically change due to invisible glow-in-the-dark paint additions. The pieces take on a whole new life and get much more interesting... which is crazy cause they are already pretty dope! Looks like another hit show from the Bottleneck guys. Pieces will be available for purchase online starting tomorrow (April 13th), and the show runs from tonight's premiere (I'll be in the house) until May 1st. The Popular Face of NY: An Art Exhibit by Raid 71 @ Bottleneck Galleries NYC

Bottleneck Galleries is at it again, and to be honest with you this may be the most fitting show they have done so far. You see, Bottleneck is located right here in my current hometown of Brooklyn, NYC... and, well lets face it, they are one of the only galleries here in NY that are focusing on pop cultured themed art shows. So when I saw that the subject of their most current show from artists Raid 71 (who was featured here on CCD a few months back... yeah buddy!) was 'The Popular Face of NY', I had to smile a bit. What better place to highlight a bunch of NYC themed art then right in the heart of Brooklyn? It is a perfect fit.... and I am loving what I have seen from the previews over at the Bottleneck Blog. They have some excellent step by step photos over their that show how these magnificent pieces come together, so get over there to check out some of the behind the scenes work on how these pieces of art come together. The show premieres tonight at 7:00 pm (I am definitely going tonight!!!) and runs for two weeks until March 29th, so if you live in the area make sure you get out there and support this local gallery in bringing pop culture art to NYC. You can click on the shop page starting March 16th at noon to buy some of the prints if you can't make it out there in person. Bottleneck Galleries Presents - Get A Room: An Art Exhibition Celebrating The Greatest Couples Of Pop Culture History

The gang over at Bottleneck Galleries keeps on knocking their art show choices completely out of the park. Hot on the heels of their Gadgets & Gizmos, Alternate Endings, and Gangs All Here art shows (which we covered here, here, and here) the Brooklyn based gallery has brought us Get A Room. The show highlights all of the most celebrated couples of pop culture history and pays homage to the love they share in their relationships. These pieces are fantastic as usual, but what has to be the highlight of the show is the absolute insane amount of mediums that these pieces were created in. You have everything from sculptures  to digital manipulation, to actual hand drawn pieces... the show runs the gamut of artistic styles. There is something for everybody here, and as usual the subjects of the pieces are very deftly chosen and executed in a witty styling. No basic two characters loving each other here... these pieces have a certain something to make them unique. As usual, you can order prints at Bottleneck's website by clicking here, and the show is going on for a few more days (it ends this Friday, March 8th). Mike D Visits Bottleneck Galleries To See The 'Alternate Ending' Show... And I Got The Pics To Prove It!!!

So I am happy to report that I have FINALLY got over to Bottleneck Galleries in Brooklyn to see what they are all about. Turns out this gallery is bringing the funk when it comes to Pop Culture themed art shows, and thank goodness they are doing it in a location that us NYers can get to (not all the way in Cali or some other state on the West Coast). Alternate Endings: An Art Show At Bottleneck Galleries

Bottleneck Galleries in Brooklyn, NY is quickly becoming the go to spot for pop culture themed art shows here on the east coast. They have had some cool exhibits recently, from The Gangs All Here to a zombie themed art show called Can't Beat Em, Join Em. But their newest show, Alternate Endings, may be one of the best yet. Bottleneck has gathered 60 pieces re-imagining some of the great movie endings of all time. What if Akira had ended with  Tetsuo winning out? What if Mickey was under Darth Vader's helmet? What if Gywenth Pawltrow's head wasn't in the box at the end of Se7en? These are some fantastic pieces that is sure to be a fantastic show. Three Mashup Posters by Justin Hillgrove

Justin Hillgrove is a very talented artist from Seattle, Washington. He runs a very cool blog entitled Imps & Monsters that helps to update all of the works that he & pal Mike Kapp put out. One of the coolest things they have on their site is three pieces that he has prepared for the upcoming April 2013 art show 'Icons & Influences' at LTD Gallery. The show will feature 30-40 paintings from Hillgrove & Kapp with some classic iconic pop culture characters, and judging from the first three pieces that have been released as a preview I definitely can't wait to see what this show has to offer. One of the pieces mashes up Charlie Brown with Evil Dead, and the other two feature killer Where The Wild Things Are characters. So wonderful.... Bottleneck Galleries: The Gangs All Here Art Show

I see lots of cool art shows going on around the country featuring pop culture topics and I get crazy with envy. Why can't any of these shows take place on my neck of the woods? Gallery 1988 is killing it in L.A., but we got an east coast taste of their stuff when they brought their Crazy 4 Cult show to NYC for the first time. But now there is a hometown gallery that is making some noise and I couldn't be happier. The gallery is named Bottleneck Galleries and is located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. They have had some ambitious shows in the past, such as one inspired by zombies and one inspired by premium cable (these pieces are phenomenal, check them out!). But they have an upcoming show that looks fantastic and I for one can't wait to see it in person. The show is called The Gang's All Here and is focused on large groups of characters coming together in movies and TV shows. There are some wonderful pieces, and the show opens November 16th through December 7th. Around The World In 80's Daze With Tom Whalen & Dave Perillo

Gallery 1988 is doing God's Work... there is no other way to state what is going on at the Cali art space. These dudes continue to curate beautiful shows highlighting pop art and the coolest pieces that are being posted about all over the Internet by people like me. For the next few weeks Gallery 1988 is running a show called "Around The World In 80's Days", a show highlighting 80's movie travel locations by Tom Whalen & Dave Perillo. Whalen is one of my favorite artists in the game & Perillo is no slouch, so the pieces are fantastic. My favorite has to be the ad for Falkor Air. So great. The 'Mucho Machismo' Art Show From Spoke Art Gallery Takes Us Back To The Good Old Days Of Action Movies

I love me some action movies, especially 80's action movies. There is no debating that the 80's was the golden decade for action films and it's brightest stars. Ah-nald. Sly. Willis. Norris. JCVD. Roddy Piper. Ripley. Need I say more? San Francisco art gallery Spoke Art put together an awesome art show entitled 'Mucho Machismo' that highlighted some of these great moments in action movie history. The 'Step Brothers' 4th Anniversary Art Show @ Gallery 1988

The gang over at Gallery 1988 are just awesome at picking topics for their art shows. Hot off the closing of their wildly successful Crazy 4 Cult: NYC show, we are getting a 4th anniversary art show in honor off 'Step Brothers'. Yup, I just typed that... 4th anniversary. How cool is that? They ain't even waiting for the 5th anniversary yo... it's Boats and Hoes all the way at Venice Beach location. I love this movie more and more... Get Out & Support Gallery 1988's Crazy 4 Cult: New York Show... Now!!!

I have often admired the many zanny art show themes that are put forth by Gallery 1988 in California... but due to logistical locational limitations (say that three times fast!) , aka the gallery is in California & I live in New York, I have never been ale to get out and see one of their shows for myself. but all of that comes to an end tonight as I plan on attending the opening night at the first show in NYC today! The gallery is opening up a pop up store at 64 Ganservoort St tonight at 6pm and the show runs until September 1st. The pieces are leaking online and look amazing. CCD will be in the house tonight, so come down and meet up with the crew. Check out a few of the pieces I have seen online after the jump to kind of wet your beak and make sure you get out to this show at some point so that we get more of these satellite shows in the future...

Family Time by Chris Murray

Pop culture artists face the challenge of trying to portray popular characters in new & interesting environments. That is what makes for a truly memorable piece. Chris Murray did just that with his entry into the I Am 8Bit Gallery's upcoming Street Fighter 25th anniversary art show. He chose two mainstays of the Street Fighter franchise, Chun Li & Guile, but portrayed them as proud parents watching their child rattle the joystick of a coin op game. Gotta love the originality of it all... Dis-asterland: A Dark Disney Art Show by Rodolfo Loaiza

La Luz de Jesus Gallery in California is putting on a very controversial art show starting August 3rd that features the darker side of the Disney universe as portrayed by artist Rodolfo Loaiza. This show has some pretty sick and twisted pieces that feature some of the most recognizable characters in the Disney stable being terrorized, tortured, and defiled by all sorts of inappropriate things. Some of these are quite clever, such as Freddy Kruger attacking Sleeping Beauty... think about that, he would have his way with her as much as he likes!!!!
