8 Bit Cinema Gives Us The 'Donnie Darko' NES Game We Always Wanted....

'Donnie Darko' is a very controversial movie among people who have seen it. It is one of the most differing opinion movies among people who have seen it I have ever discussed with anyone. Most people either REALLY LOVE IT (like me) or REALLY HATE IT. Never really much in the middle. Richard Kelly really made an interesting movie, and I would rather have something that sparks debate over a boring 'OK' movie any day of the week. So when 8 Bit Cinema decides to give it the Nintendo 8-bit treatment, I have to share... and love every second of it! They bring the world of 'Donnie Darko' into the world of 8-bit, down to the dialogue and even the music (an 8-bit version of 'Mad World' at the end? Wow... just wow!). The Shining - 8 Bit by CineFix

I am all for 8 bit conversions of anything... 8 bit is a lifestyle, a reminder of an era far gone. But it even cooler when the thing being 8 bit-ified is a classic movie, especially a classic movie that I love! The Shining is one of my favorite Kubrick films, and not because it is so perfect in its adaption of the book or because it is so great... it is just because it holds a special place in my heart. Jack Nicholson is just so creep-tastic as Jack Torreance, and Shelley Duvall is a perfect victim. The little kid is spooky as fuck... and Scatman Cruthers is just icing on the already delicious cake. So when I got to see this awesome 8 bit rendition of The Shining done by CineFix, I was sitting on the edge of my seat. Crazy!!!! Thanks to Tommy Lombardozzi for sharing this. We were lucky enough to get a Friday the 13th NES game and a Texas Chainsaw Massacre Atari game... god I wish this one were real! Check it out after the jump...

Drive For Sega Genesis... Wait, What?

I love when modern TV shows and films are given the 8 bit Nintendo/ 16 bit Sega/Super Nintendo treatment. It is old hat now, but still pretty cool. Youtuber Gunderson Munderson seems to have nailed it with his rendition of one of my more recent favorite films, Drive. He gets the vibe of the movie down with his buildings, and with his music choice (which, according to his notes on the Youtube vid was created with the same Yamaha music emulator that was used for all Genesis games). Very cool indeed... I would play the shit out of this game. Check out the video after the jump...

Ghosts n Goblins & Dig Dug Get toys? Yup... I'm In!!!

I am not a big toy collector, nor do I claim to be up on the whole toy game. But given the fact that it has gotten larger and larger over the last few years to the point where toys & collecting toys have infiltrated the mainstream, it is hard not to catch some news about cool releases every now and again. And when the tidbits I come across are from two of my favorite coin-op/Nintendo games of all time, they get showcased here on CCD. Ghost n Goblins may be my favorite side scrolling 8 bit game ever. I love the adventures of Arthur in his quest against Lucifer. And I always loved the fact that you would lose your armor when you first got hit, and would be forced to play the rest of the board in your underwear. Dig Dug is my favorite old school coin operated game. You can keep you Pac Man, Ms. Pac Man, Space Invaders, Galga, etc.... I'll stick with inflating bad guys until they burst and dropping rocks on their heads! Both of these properties were given the toy treatment by a company called Gargamel. These cool ass toys seem to come unpainted, and then are customized any way you want. Since I am not really up on the whole toy game, I am not sure. But these look amazing, so I thought I should share. He-Man & The Pixelated Masters of the Universe by Caleb Hystad

I love me some cool ass animation, especially when something so simple comes out so perfect. In this case I am talking about animator Caleb Hystad's pixelated version of the opening credits to he-Man and the Masters of the Universe. MOTU is one of my favorite cartoons ever, but seeing it get the 8-bit treatment makes it a bit cooler. One of the coolest geek themed things that has happen in the past few years has been the upswing of t-shirt websites that are printing cool shirts based on geek properties. More and more artists are using their cool themed fan art that they create to turn them into cooler t-shirts. Ghost Glide is one of the best in the game at doing this right now, and his latest shirt had me hankering to the days of Nintendo's 8 bit Legend of Zelda even though it features every bodies favorite Asgardians, Thor & Odin! Chuck Norris Takes On Your Favorite Video Games... And Kicks Their Ass!!!

Chuck Norris has long been the punchline for countless jokes and situational skits based on his invincibility.  But video artist Daneboy decided to pit the Big Red Machine against some of our favorite video game titles from the past 30 years. These 40 second clips depict an 8-bit Norris taking on the viscous green pigs of Angry Birds, level 1-1 of Super Mario Brothers, and the sneaky ghosts of Pacman. Masters Of The Universe Gets An 8 Bit Makeover by Sound of Design

More and more people are doing 8 bit versions of our favorite comic book and cartoon characters, but not everybody is doing a great job on capturing the details in the simplicity that is 8 bit art. One artist, Sound of Design (aka Ty Lettau), are doing it... and doing it well (LL voice!!!) There are tons of prints for sale in their Society 6 page, but the ones that I like the best were the Masters of the Universe pieces. They made three... one for the her, one for the villains and one for Hordak & the Snake Men. They are so cool... check em out after the jump!

I came across this wonderful website entitled Title Screams, which is a site that celebrates the wonderful triumphs of past 8 & 16 bit video game title screens. This site has tons of screen caps, and they brought back a lot of good memories involving controllers with two buttons and no save features. This is a funny video from Dorkly featuring Arthur of the 'Ghost n Goblins' franchise haggling with his blacksmith over the armor he just purchased. I'm not sure if this dialogue was in the original game (wink wink), but it is extremely true and very funny. Kudos to Rob at Topless Robot for finding this one. Hysterical 8-bit humor.

8 Bit Version of 'Moon' by Mads Herman

Anyone who reads this blog knows I absolutely sweat Duncan Jones's unreal sci-fi extravaganza 'Moon'.. it is a sensational movie that you must check out if you haven't already. Here is an 8-bit version of the movie by artist Mads Herman, if it was a point and click video game:

If I played this game back in ´91, I think my brain would literally blow up. It just started with me wanting to do some nice SCUMM fan-art, but the further I got with this, the more I felt that the narrative of this particular flick would fit awesomely with the whole point'n'clicky thing. Except for maybe the lack of a character gallery. It was pretty tough for me completing games like Secret of Monkey Island, because as a 12 year old danish kid, I didn't really have a clue what a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle was, for example... and the artwork was also pretty tough to decrypt at times... but now I know how hard it is to do Sam Bell, when you only have about 12x12 pixels to do it on :D Anyway, hope you like this one... I might do more, I dunno yet.

I would want to hear Kevin Spacey's robot voice echoing through my house over and over & Sam Rockwell kicking clone ass... god I love these 8 bit recreations that remind me of Nintendo!!!

It's Not 'Game Over' For Artist Aled Lewis... He's Just Getting Fired Up!
