With our upcoming Universal Horror themed art show right around the corner (Sat, Oct 25th at the Irish Haven in Brooklyn) Jedi Rob decided to sit on down with the guy who got him involved in horror at a very young age... his dad. We can always count on our buddy Cal to bring us some awesome images no matter the topic... but when it comes to Halloween it seems his image stash is even more plentiful. Fab Ciraolo has a very unique style to his art. It is batshit crazy... and that is what makes it so fantastic. Fab takes very familiar characters (some real life people, some fictional) and portrays them in a different light. A light that may not be what you expect. When I think Beetlejuice I think a black and white striped suit. He Man, bearskin draws and his chest straps jump into my head. Marilyn Monroe is always in a puffy dress in my head. Mother Teresa is always in a habit... But not in the world of Fab Ciraolo. here, Frankenstien is a part animal club kid. Marilyn & Mother Teresa are hipster chicks with tats. Beetlejuice channels his inner James Dean. He-Man is an avid golfer. These are so great. I love this time of year because this is when all the creative types start busting out horror themed pieces. One of my favorite Internet finds has to be Mr. Whaite's Tumblr, which is always chock full of dope images. He specializes in neon sign type art (the kind that switches up a pic after three seconds), but he also comes with some straightforward pieces that are dope as well. Look at his take on Frankenstein's monster as an example... he mashes it up with Albert Einstein to create FrankEinstein, which is actually a movie I would love to see. I have seen version of the Frankenstein story where the monster is intelligent, but if he was the smartest man on the planet? Yeah, that would be insane. Check out the mashup after the jump....
I love me some Deviant Art, and you do come across some really cool things when perusing the things that are posted on there. One of the cool things I came across this week comes to us from Chile, in the way of artist Carlos Valenzuela. He has created two awesome vintage movie posters for films that would have featured pin-up superstar Marilyn Monroe facing off against the the classic Universal Monsters. Check out the posters for The Huntress (Monroe takes on Drac, Wolfman, and Frankenstein) and The Huntress Returns (with Monroe taking on The Creature from the Black Lagoon). Director Mike Dougherty made a classic Halloween horror anthology film entitled Trick R Treat... it is one of the greatest horror films of the last 20 years. If you haven't seen it, get in there (it's on Netflix Instant) and see it right away. It has become a Halloween tradition here in the DeVito household. Anyway, FearNet shows Trick R Treat all day on Halloween, and as a part of that marathons promotion they contracted Mr Dougherty to make a short film. It is entitled 'Making Friends' and is one of the coolest versions of the Frankenstein mythos I have ever seen. It even features everyone's favorite masked villain, Sam! Every once in a blue I'll read some cooky premise for a book or movie and be blown away. You know, something so ridiculous that it makes you say "Wow... how did they come up with that one?". Also, sometimes I see these crazy plots and think "How come no one has ever put these concepts together before?". When I read about 'Frankenstein's Army' over at /Film yesterday, both of those thoughts popped in my head. How perfect... the Nazi's (the most evil group of people ever) go one step further and use, fellow German, Dr. Frankenstein's re-animation formula to raise an army of the undead. Yeah... I'll watch the shit out of this one regardless of how it turns out. Here is a teaser clip:

My main man Jeff Bond called me up yesterday to tell me that he had an extra ticket to watch a screening of Danny Boyle's Frankenstein play being simulcasted into a local movie theater. I couldn't have said yes soon enough! I am a big fan of Boyle, and the play is being held in London.... this was going to be my only shot at seeing it, so I was in.
The other reason I had wanted to see this play was because the stars, Johnny Lee Miller & Benedict Cumberbatch, switch playing the roles of Victor Frankenstein & The Monster. Each night they alternate, putting their own spin on the two main leads. This is not something I have ever heard of before... and I really liked Miller in Dexter season 5. I was ready to go!!!
The version we saw had Miller as The Monster, and boy was he great. Boyle utilizes a very unique circular stage to put on the show, one that also has a rotating portion of the floor that he uses very well for effect. There was also an intense cluster of lights above the stage that flare often to signify the lighting giving The Monster life. Miller was superb from the opening scene, and the rest of the cast was great as well.
Benedict Cumberbatch was very well chosen to play the rebllious Dr. Frankenstein, but I just do not think he could do The Monster anywhere near the justice that Miller gave the part. In this version of the story, The Monster picks up knowledge pretty well due to the adult size of his brain. He learns to read and recite lines of prose & poetry from Milton, yet he has a hard time adjusting to the physical limitations of his newly animated body. A truly unreal performance. Very well done indeed.

Marvel Comics is trying to ensure that their Thor movie is a huge success upon release this May... and so they are approaching the film's promotion from all angels. One way is to mash up Thor with some Hollywood legends on variant covers for some of their upcoming comic books. This is a pretty cool idea, and the first two covers are making the rounds.
First up: Artist Mike del Mundo and his cover for 'Uncanny X-Force #7' that features Thor and Frankenstein's Monster!!!
Next up, we got artist Greg Horn and his 'Heroes for Hire #5' cover where Thor is all set to battle The Great White Terror... Jaws!!!

Since its election day, I thought it was a great time to feature artist Das Chupa's political posters featuring some interesting characters for government positions. Since I am totally unimpressed by both Democrats & Republicans alike at this point, I would consider voting for all of these guys if they were running in my area. I bet you a candidate would think twice about talking shit and slinging mud if they were campaigning against these guys... they might catch a bad decision for real!!! Because of that cool ass banner above that Tommy Lombardozzi was gracious enough to do for us says so... and AMC FearFest has started, and this year they are going in!!! Click here for the full schedule, which includes horror movies from the 1940's all the way up until the new crop of horror movies. You got everything from 28 Days Later to The Texas Chainsaw Masscre, from the 1944 classic The Lodger to Funny Games... they even got some Halloween themed 3 Stooges episodes and stuff like that. All horror for the rest of the month... que them DVR's son! And the best part: It all culminates with the world premiere of The Walking Dead on Halloween Night!!!! God, I can not wait for that motherfuckering show... it just looks rediculous!!!! On a side note, today, Saturday the 23rd of October, AMC is showing both the 1931 versions of Frankenstien & Dracula starting at 10 AM. Catch Boris Karloff & Bela Lugosi playing the Universal monsters in all their glory!!! The Scary Season starts now!!!
