CCD Interviews: Live From The Show Floor Of The 2014 NY Comic Con - Fat Guy Inc. Doing It BIG On The Main Floor!!!!

Most of the CCD gang is on the chubby side... we are proud of that. Hell, even the skinny guys down with our crew put on when it comes to throwing down food. It may be one of our favorite things to do as a group (especially Tommy & I). So when I came across an interesting looking artist booth with a couple of guys who look ALOT like me sitting behind it I had to walk over. And when I saw the name of the company... well, Fat Guy Inc. certainly has an appeal to a guy of my size!!!! Brendan & Peat are two Long Island residents that were  brought together through food... and now that they are a team, they are taking the art show/con circuit by storm! They have some great pieces, and the coolest part is that their styles are different but work well together at the same time. These guys are hysterical, and the art is pretty amazing. They refer to their collected works as 'an artistic stew', considering they have many different styles and mediums that they work with. One of my favorite pieces was a scene from Star Wars, which was after the destruction of Uncle Owen & Aunt Beru's house. The is a smoldering pile of what can only be assumed to be a Beru/Owen souffle, and Brendan refered to this piece as "A Tatooine BBQ". Hysterical... and all food related! CCD Interviews: Live From The Show Floor Of The 2014 NY Comic Con - Artist 'SpaceWolf' And His Unreal Woodwork!!!

While we were cruising the show floor at the 2014 NY Comic Con we are always on the lookout for cool booths, and when we passed by the SpaceWolf booth on the edge of The Block we got just that. Awesome wood carved art... and a crazy vintage spacesuit to boot? Yup, the look and aesthetic of the booth got me to approach it from across the way. Then once I met the proprietor and struck up a conversation with him I was really intrigued. Original wood carved art, hand made in Brooklyn NY, and all pieces limited to a run of just 50 laser engraved pieces with the original being destroyed after? Yup, this was an interesting booth to say the least. The work was unreal, so pinpoint accurate and fine in the line work. And the subject material was quite awesome too... vintage spacemen, sea monsters, crazy flying ships, and all types of shit that we truly love fill the pieces that SpaceWolf has created. After the show, I went over to his website and saw even more cool ass pieces he has to offer... and some of those were much more pop culturally related. Chtulu and Battle Royale? Yeah, this is the exact way I like my art! They also create things like IPhone wood skins, laser engraved moleskin journals, and even necklaces & other jewelry. But the coolest part was helping to support the dissemination of a fellow Brooklynites fantastic artwork to a wider audience, which was truly our pleasure. Street Art Meets Super Heroes In Artist Dillon Boy's Work....

There is nothing I enjoy more than finding a cool artists work on Instagram or the Internet, no matter how late to the party I may be. Artist James 'Dillon Boy' Wright has been on the scene for a minute (his Obama 'Hope' poster concoction got him into Time Magazine way back in 2008) and I have seen a few of his pieces over the years. But I just found his Instagram page and was blown away by some of the work he had going on. He has a 'Western Grafitti' series that portrays some of your favorite superheroes in western style get-ups, guns a blazing. Then he has his crazy Disney princess re-creations, or his 'superheros meet real life' mash-ups like 'Nobody Likes The Thing' (my personal fave) which puts these extraordinary characters into real life situations (Thing is getting no likes or comments on Instagram... lol). His shit is dope... and like a typical creative artist he doesn't just stop at the actual artwork. If you look at the contents of his Instagram feed in grid format he takes close ups of his work and makes 6 and 9 square collages that supersize his pieces. A pretty great way to show of the detail of his pieces. So even though I may be a bit late to the party on Dillon Boy's work, it is never to late to give a cat his props when they are due. Comic Book Quote Posters by G3N3S1S Studios

Reddit has be finding us some gold lately, most of it coming courtesy of my main man Joe Fletch and his obsessive surfing of the 'Net. Thank you sir. Anywho, G3N3S1S Studios is responsible for creating these awesome minimalist quote posters featuring some of the most popular characters in comic books, and boy are they pretty terrific. They mind all types of books and movies for the quotes, from classics like The Dark Knight Returns and more recent books like Batman & Robin. They quote the big guns like Bats, Cap & Wonder Woman... and also minor characters like Booster Gold, Cyborg, and Batgirl. These are just fantastic. X-Men 50th Anniversary - 30 X-Men Throughout The Years

The X-Men are in the midst of a 50th anniversary celebration, and when you have been around that long you are sure to have undergone some changes. No way everybody is going to look exactly the way they did in the beginning. But how much have they actually changed? Iceman has gone from a giant snowman in the 60s to one of the coolest ice made figures in the history of comics. Beast has gone through some unreal changes as well... like furry changes! And how about Psylocke turning into Sasha Grey after all these years? Now that is an X-Men casting I would love to see! I must say, Mystique seems to be the one who has undergone the LEAST amount of changes... which is ironic, since her power is to change her appearance into anything she wants! All in all, these pieces are dope and encapsulate some of the greatest renditions of the X characters throughout the years. I am working on finding out who the artist is, but for now just enjoy these fantastic pieces as a trip down memory lane! Can you name them all????

Artin' It Up - 2013 All Horror Week Edition - Day #1

Tommy Lombardozzi is a great artist that I have worked with here at CCD since the very beginning. He is also a really great friend of mine. But watching him grow as an artist and expanding his artistic abilities to new mediums has to be one of the coolest things about collaborating with him in general. Tommy has always created awesome new pieces for All Horror Week (check here, here and here for some examples), and this year is no exception. He has created 5 new pieces, one for each day. The first piece tackles on of Universal's original horror icons. No... not Drac, or Frankenstein, or the Wolfman. No Creature or Mummy... nope. TL is taking on the baddest bitch of the classic Universal Horror movie universe: The Bride of Frankenstein!!! This piece is 10 x 8 and is done Marker, pen and pencil. Another great one, and not the usual subject matter that is usually highlighted when we see art inspired by the Universal classics. Postma Does The Ghostbusters

Once again Canadian artist Phil Postma finds a fresh and unique project to put his own personal design twist on them. This time he takes on iconic movie posters of the eighties and gives them a Ghostbuster theme - perfect for Halloween. CCD Interviews: Artist Sean Hamilton At His Booth In Artist Alley at the 2013 NY Comic Con

My man Sean Hamilton and I go way back... last year at the NY Comic Con to be exact! We met Sean last year in Artist Alley and have seen him at a few other cons, and considering we have so much in common we always chop it up a bit when we see each other. See, Sean is a comic & pop culture nerd... but he is also a sneaker head. These are two of my favorite things as well, and so we have similar sensibilities in terms of the things we personally like. This tends to skew me towards the work he does, which pairs a popular pop culture character (Superman, Spidey, Michonne, etc) with a fresh pair of kicks. Some are obvious, like Catwoman paired with the Tiffany Dunks, or Hulk paired with the Hulk Dunks. Some are based on color ways, like Superman in the Fire Red 4s or Batman in the Thunder 4s. And some are just conceptual, such as Teen Wolf dunking a basketball in the Nike Air Mags (aka Marty McFly's from Back to the Future fame). Truly great and creative stuff... and I love seeing what he comes up with next. The best part is that Sean usually does very limited runs of each print... and once he sells out, they are gone forever! I copped his Batman piece and he threw in the Superman for free (thanks brother!). CCD Presents: Dave Ryan of Manticore Stencil Art Live From The Floor of the 2013 NY Comic Con

One of the creepiest and trippiest booths I passed on my laps around the floor had to be the Manticore Stencil Art booth. I am no stranger to mash-ups, no matter how strange and weird they may be. I am also no stranger to weird mediums of art. And artist Dave Ryan has surprised me both of those categories with some of the most unusual stuff I have ever seen. Yoda hanging in a strip club, getting a killer view from down low? Michael Jackson and E.T. chillin by a river? Luke getting a ticket in his speeder from a motorcycle cop? Chewy catching a haircut from Edward Scissorhands? Mario coming out of a warp pipe in a real river? Yup, all of these are subject of pieces that Dave has created. And the art itself, not just the ideas, are very unique. He takes old records and stencils his creations on those. He makes over-sized, oil painted canvases and 3 x 2 inch magnets. He offers prints for a very low denomination. And he does it all with a huge smile on his face! Dave was real cool, and honestly he gave us a great interview. I picked up a bunch of magnets and a print, and I wanted to buy so much more! You can see some of the pieces I liked the best after the jump, as well as the full embedded video. Gollum Never Looked So Cool

This is a phenomenal piece of graffiti artwork from artist Smug One  featuring Middle Earth's favorite sneak thief Gollum!!! This piece is gigantic and is so detailed... totally awesome. I love it when street artists get a touch of geek in their work. Absolutely spectacular... click after the jump to see the full piece.

Can Mondo Get Any Cooler??? Yup, They Can!!!

I have always been a fan of the Mondo crew, the guys who create posters in conjunction with the Alamo Drafthouse. They always seem to make rediculously awesome posters and work with some of the greatest artists in the game. That said, last year they worked with artist Aaron Horkey on a print for the new re-make of True Grit. That poster was amazing... but even though it was great, the gang at Mondo have taken it one step further. They decided to do a laser engraved wood carving using the Horkey poster as a blue print. This Saturday, We Drink & Draw.... Check Out "Bar", An Art Show By Joe Milazzo

So its the weekend, and you are looking for something to do besides spend all your money on greedy family members Christmas presents. Well, do I have an event for you!!! Friend of CCD Joe Milazzo is having an amazing art show, and he is having it at a bar... a bar!!! It's fitting, since the theme of the show is the goings on inside bars anyway. Check out the description from the man himself:

Hey friends. I'd like to invite you all to my first art show. Over the last couple of years I started painting again (after a 10 year hiatus) and I developed what I believe is a style of my own. I started painting scenes of my favorite bars until I realized I had the makings of what could be a good show.

In keeping with the theme, I decided to have the show at my favorite bar (and one of Brooklyn's oldest... opened 1906) Three Jolly Pigeons Pub in Bay Ridge. The show will be open all day but the main party kicks off at 9pm, going all night till we close the place down.

There will be great music, drink specials...plus! a special performance by legendary Brooklyn troubadour Tommy Lombardozzi and his band, The Hollow Legs featuring Michael Lombardozzi, Jon Carrai, Wayne Schneiderman and special guest performers!

I hope everyone can be part of what hopefully will be a special evening. Thanks!!!
