There is something about Football movies that separates them from all sports movies in general. The raw carnage of the games... the depth of the team dynamic... maybe the dichotomy of the warrior on the field vs. the normal human being off it... whatever it is, it makes Football movies unique. With the 2016 Super Bowl past us, we decided this would be a great time to delve deep into the world of the USA's most popular sport and see which films hold up through the years. This past Super Bowl wasn't much of a game, at least not the one we were promised. The #1 Offense of the Denver Broncos were completely shut down by the oppressive #1 Defense of the Seattle Seahawks in what quickly went from a potential battle for the ages to the laughing stock of all big games. I have heard countless stories from people who were multi-tasking while "watching" (aka not paying attention) to the game. Seems like graphic artist John Raya may have had some time on his hands, and he whipped up 32 sweet Star Wars themed football helmets to represent all the teams in the NFL. Some are no brainers, like the green Philly Eagles becoming the Yoda's or the black & silver Raiders becoming the Vaders. But others are much more clever, like the Broncos as the Hoth Taun Taun's... an ironic choice, considering how fierce they were all season and how they got butchered up in the SB. I have a longstanding tradition of being a monstrous football fan, so the Super Bowl is always really important to me regardless of who the teams playing are. But lets be honest. As a pop culture junkie and TV aficionado extraordinaire, I am also a huge fan of the TV commercials that accompany the game as well. I am going to share my faves with you from this year, in no particular order. All the commercials were great, but these are the ones that stood out to me... enjoy my picks after the jump!

The commercials are some of the best parts of the Super Bowl. Very rarely does the big game live up to the hype... usually there is a blowout. This years game was very good, but the commercials were awesome as always. Here are the ones that I like the best:
Audi - Release The Hounds
This one is hysterical... showing how luxurious an Audi can be. Props for the crazy stunts, the dodo, and for really getting Kenny G for the commercial. That was great.
Eminem - Brisk Ice Tea (I got some demands)
I always loved the Brisk commercials that featured real people in claymation form... the Sinatra & Rocky ones were some of the best. But this one is quite funny, and to be straightforward it is probably the truest commercial I have ever seen. Can't you see Em asking for this stuff??? I could...

Monkeys. In Suits. Driving Cars. That's all... I'm sold.
Doritos - House Sitting
That magical Doritos dust sure can accomplish a lot.... this one is quite funny from the perennial powerhouse that is Doritos.
Chevy - Cast of Glee Sings "See The USA"
I am a big fan of the show Glee, and love the way that Chevy chose to use the cast in this campaign. It started with a 30 second teaser spot outlining Sue Sylvester's latest plot to sabotage the Glee Club, and the second one being the full 2 minute Chevy video. Great job from a great show. One question: Where is Shue, Quinn, and Finn???
But my favorite commercial of the day goes to the NFL:
NFL - Best Fans Ever
Wow... the NFL salutes its fans all over the country by going back and superimposing league apparel onto characters from your favorite TV shows. Norm in a Pats jersey, The Fonz in a Packers jersey, Marsha Brady getting smacked in the nose wearing a San Diego Chargers shirt... this one was great. Plus, you gotta love them for including South Park at the end. Great job.

The Super Bowl gives us great football, but it also gives us an opportunity to see some of the great movies that are coming out in the next year. Some are for movies that we have seen trailers from, and some are our first looks at whats going to be on the screen. So lets jump right in to the ones that I liked best.

The Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl last night, beating Ben Rapistberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers. This is quite a big deal, because the Packers were a #6 seed in the playoffs, The Steelers were a very tough team, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers was on the brink of coming out as a superstar... and they got it done.
I was rooting for them, so I feel quite fulfilled. I am a huge fan of Rodgers, and I love the championship belt celebration he does when he scores a touch down:
Above is the actual belt that Clay Matthews had made up for Rodgers and gave him on the podium last night when Rodgers won the MVP award... very cool.
Now, as for the rest of the game. The Super Bowl is a spectacle, and there were some interesting things that occurred. First of all, Christina Aguilera butchered the National Anthem. She actually left out a full line of the song. While this has been well documented all over the news, here is something you might not have heard. Vegas takes all types of funny wagers on the game, called prop bets. You can bet on who will win the coin toss, what color Gatorade the coach will get doused in, and things of that nature. There was a bet on how long Christina would stretch out her rendition of the National Anthem. It varies depending on the place where you made the bet, but it was around 1 minute 53 seconds to 1 minute 55 seconds. Tons of money is wagered on this kind of nonsense... and she came in at around 1 minute 53 seconds. That means if she would have sang the full song and not forgot the line, she would have been over the mark. That means she costs everybody who better over money, and saved everybody who bet under money. It's fucked up... and I can't believe they take bets on this. Wow.
I was also a fan of the Black Eyed Peas halftime performance. I liked the Tron inspired costumes of the extras, the cover of 'Sweet Child of Mine' featuring Slash from Guns n Roses, and the overall fun tone of the show. Janet Jackson ruined it a few years ago with that nipple ring, and since then the NFL has played it safe. They have gone with classic rockers like the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen, and while those guys are great... well... they are getting a bit 'up there' in age and it shows. I don't want Bruce breaking a hip on national TV, or Keith Richards finally succumbing to years of abusing his body at halftime of the biggest game of the year. I am glad they took a shot on a more contemporary group. I am not a huge fan of the Black Eyed Peas, but felt they did a very good job.
All and all, it was a great 4 hours. Congrats to Green Bay again... oh yeah, and fuck you Brett Favre!!! Hehehehehehehehe....
This could be the scene in Feb. 2014... or it could be worse when the Super Bowl makes its FIRST appearance in NY. The NFL announced that the new stadium of the NY Giants and Jets beat out the city of Tampa Bay, Florida for the big game in 2014. While it is not such a surprise that the NFL would want to have the biggest game of the year in the NYC area, it does go against the NFL's policy of having the Super Bowl in a warm weather environment. The game was held in Detroit a few years back, but that was in a dome. What would happen if NY should get pelted with a snow storm? I'll tell you what would happen... it would be freaking awesome!!! I hope it snows 25 inches that week. Sure, that will pretty much guarantee that the NFL will never try a cold weather/open air Big Game ever again, but the fact that we get a chance at a Blizzard Bowl would be worth it!!!
