99 Problems: A Tumblr That Takes A Look At The Real Issues Jigga Has...

Jay-Z is one of my favorite musical artists in the game. He has been since the first time I heard Dead Presidents (his first official single) way back in 1996. One of the most memorable musical moments of his career has to be The Black Album, an album that many thought would be his last at the time. The 2004 album is a masterpiece, and also featured the return of long gone uber producer Rick Rubin with the track '99 Problems'. The songs hook has been used in many instances by people since 2004, but I have never seen an interpretation as fantastic as the blog 99 Problems. This tumblr features daily pictures by Ali Graham, and the pics depict a cartoon Jay-Z dealing with everyday problems. While a bitch might not be a problem Jigga has to deal with (hehehe), things like not getting the part in a movie or tying a bow tie lead to some hysterically animated pieces. There are 67 entries in the blogs roll so far, and I am not really sure is Graham plans on continuing after she reaches 99, but you can click here and check them all out and click here to buy prints. You can also check out my personal faves after the jump. Great idea for a blog, and even better execution by a very cool artists.

No Church In The Wild - Jay-Z & Kanye West ft. Frank Ocean

Watch The Throne was my favorite album last summer, uniting two hip hop legends like Jay-Z & Kanye to produce a pretty great record. One of the hottest tracks on the album had to be 'No Church In The Wild'. The beat is bananas, the lyrics are fantastic, and Frank Ocean's street sounding R&B sound complete a perfect track. It has such an ominous beat that it has become the "it" song for movie trailers since last summer, featuring prominently in the Denzel Washington/Ryan Reynolds film Safe House & the upcoming Leonardo DiCaprio version of The Great Gatsby (Huh... wtf?). So it seemed fitting for the crew to reach out to Romain Gravas, who has a knack for making music videos that may only be 4 minutes long but are like full length movies. This one is full of drama and intensity. Plus I love that they used the unedited version of the song for the video. Check it out embedded after the jump....

Adele Teams Up With The Throne For Two Awesome Songs

I haven't featured a lot of music lately here on CCD because honestly I haven't heard anything worth featuring. But over the past week I have heard not one, but TWO tracks from songstress Adele featuring both Kings of The Throne Jay-Z & Kanye West. I like both tracks, but the Jay one gets the slight edge in my book. You can hear both tracks after the jump...

2 New Tracks To Make Your Ipod Bump....

First up we got Kanye West & Jay-Z with their first single H.A.M. (Hard As a Motherfucker) from their upcoming album Watch The Throne. Yeah, these two are making an album... everybody else needs to pack it up. It's over for all you chumps.

Next up we got my favorite dirty girl Ke$ha checking in with one of the greatest MC's of all time, Andre 3000 of Outkast. The song is called Sleazy (Remix), and I absolutely love it! Thats a hard ass beat, and it's been a long time since I heard Dre spit some bars....

Plus, since it is a Ke$ha song, I get to run this excellent picture of her being bent over by Katy Perry... your welcome!!!

Throwback Thursday - 11/18/2010 - Jay-Z "Decoded" Edition

In honor of Jigga Man's behind the lyrics book 'Decoded', I decided to base todays Throwback Thursday on the songs that I am most lookng forward to reading about in the pages of "Decoded". I can not wait to hear how he made these gems... the battles, the disses, the drama... where he was in his mind at the time of recording all of these timeless tracks. With no further ado, I present my Jay-Z picks:

"Decoded" Gives Some Insight Into the Genius That Is Jay-Z

Jay-Z's much anticipated, highly controversial autobiographical book "Decoded" collaborated on the book with former Source magazine editor Dream Hampton, and it lays a foundation for the stories that inspired Hov to come up with all of his hit records. 11 consecutive #1 albums, 55 millon records sold, and 10 Grammy awards later, Hov is by far the most successful male solo artist of my generation. I can not wait to get into the who, what, when, wheres, whys, and hows that went into his thought process. Ironically, Jay never writes his rhymes... he just gets in the booth and spits his lyrics of the dome. Now he is taking a step back and writing the backstory instead. Thats quite ironic... yet not in a bad way at all. You can order you copy of the hardcover book by clicking here. So what are you waiting for? Take a peak into the mind of a musical genius. Is this a book you might read? Tell us in the comment section below!!!

CCD Jacks Perpetual Dissatisfaction's Review Of The Jay-Z & Eminem Concert...

Friend of CCD, and good friend of mine Joe Esq was fortunate enough to attend what most people are calling "The Hip Hop Woodstock", Jay-Z & Eminem at Yankee Stadium last week. He wrote about his experience on his blog, Perpetual Dissatisfaction, and I decided to reprint it here for you on CCD because of how great it was. Click the link above to read all of his zany rants and raves... the kid could write!!! Now lets get to the post...

On Tuesday, September 14, 2010 I witnessed history. That’s not exaggeration or hyperbole; the more I think about it, the Jay-Z/Eminem concert at Yankee Stadium was nothing less than a defining moment for the several generations that were in attendance. I wanted to write this on Wednesday, when the experience was really fresh in my head, but I decided to wait a little bit to let my thoughts crystallize. Well, as I sit here, almost five days removed, I still haven’t... recovered I guess would be the right word (that’s almost a pun, unintended, I assure you). I’m going to try and put this into words, try and express to anyone reading this that didn’t have the privilege of being there just how moving an experience it was.

“Ok, so what’s the big deal?” you might be asking. “Even though it was headlined by two of the biggest and best to ever rock the mic, it was still just another hip-hop concert at the end of the day right?” YOU SHUT YOUR GODDAMN IDIOT MOUTH! Oops, sorry. I mean, no you’re wrong, it was so much more than that. To begin with, the idea of a hip-hop concert even being at Yankee Stadium is incredible. Jay said that it would have been unimaginable just ten years ago, and I have to agree with that. Yankee Stadium, even more so than Madison Square Garden, is the pinnacle of entertainment venues; having your show there automatically takes you from “concert” to “Event”. That capital E is not a mistake. If you don’t get it, it’s a perfect, almost poetic statement of just how far hip-hop has come. Any questions about the genre’s legitimacy, about its place in pop culture, and in music culture, and in our culture in general should be put to rest once and for all. The fact that the show was headlined by a guy who grew up poor in the Marcy Houses, about 12 miles south of the Stadium only adds to the poetry.

Speaking of whom, to say Jay and Em both killed it would be a gross understatement. One of my biggest gripes about live music in general and usually live hip-hop in particular, is that the song performed live sounds nothing like it does on the album. There’s the old cliché about rap concerts being nothing more than a bunch of dudes jumping around screaming on stage. Nothing could be further from the truth for either Jay or Em, even when the stage did get a little crowded. Jay performed most of his songs perfectly, without even using a hype man in fact. Em had Denaun (a.k.a. Kon Artis of D12) hyping him, which was fine... most rappers can’t keep their breath as well as Jay-Z can (they don’t call him “One Take Hov” for no reason). What I’m trying to say is, even sitting several hundred feet away from the stage like we were, every song sounded great.

With all that said, what struck me the most about this show, aside from the historical impact and what it means for hip-hop in general, is the fact that Jay-Z and Eminem, probably more than any other artists, were a big part of the soundtrack of the past ten to twelve years, which for me means my twenties (and a little bit of my extra-twenties). As they both went through their respective sets, I was taking a journey back in time. Anyone who knows me knows I didn’t really start living a fun and interesting life until around 1999 or so; which pretty much coincides with Eminem’s debut and Jay-Z really catching fire (right around the time Hot97 had that stinger that joked “BLAZING HIP-HOP and JAY-Z). So while Em and Jay were rocking the mic on stage I found myself back in the stockroom at GAP, and partying my way through law school, and at Ruby’s in Bay Ridge getting my first real taste of nightlife with closest friends and reliving a thousand other fond (and some not so fond) memories. While I was there I said it was sublime, but I’m not even sure that’s the right word. I can’t really find the right word in fact, but I do know that at a few points I found myself getting choked up at the emotional impact. Thankfully, after talking to a few other people, I found out I wasn’t the only one being a homo that night, because the experience wasn’t unique to me.

The show was opened by B.O.B and he did a fine job getting the crowd warmed up. Eminem took the stage a little while later, with an energy and enthusiasm that was absolutely contagious. Him and Kon Artis got the crowd hyped up right away and they didn’t let things settle down until they left the stage. Em did a bunch of solo songs (“Won’t Back Down”, “3am”, “Square Dance”, “W.T.P.”, “Kill You”, “No Love” “So Bad”, “Cleanin’ Out My Closet” and “The Way I Am”), then brought out D-12 they did “Fight Music” and “Purple Pills” , which Em interrupted because he wanted to do “My Band” instead (if you know the song you get the joke). At some point Bizarre ended up with his shirt off. Then Em got serious and and dedicated the night to the real lead singer of D12, Proof. D12 cleared the stage and Em brought out B.O.B. to do “Airplanes” with him. Em did a few more solo songs (“Stan”, “Sing For The Moment”, “Toy Soldiers” and “Forever”), and then brought out 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo (complete with glow in the dark Gucci outfits - Yayo’s was camouflage). They did “Patiently Waiting” together then Em gave the stage to G-Unit for “I Get Money”, “Beamer, Benz or Bentley” and “In the Club”. G-Unit cleared out and Em came back and did “Til I Collapse” and “Cinderella Man”. Em then slowed things down and dedicated “Love The Way You Lie” to the ladies. Then he turned it around and dedicated a song to the guys. I hoped it would be “Superman” but for some reason it was “My Name Is”. Next, out came Dr. Dre. They did “The Next Episode”, “Still D.R.E.” and “Nothin’ But A G Thang” and then Dre departed the stage but not before promising that “Detox” was still coming. Not for nothing Doc, but you’ve been saying that for eleven years. Nobody believes you. Em then closed the show with “Crack a Bottle”, “The Real Slim Shady”, “Without Me” and “Not Afraid”. Em thanked the audience and said goodbye but the lights stayed down so I knew he’d be back. Sure enough, he did “Lose Yourself” as the encore and his half of the show came to an end. I sat there thinking that if the show were to end right then and there, I could go home happy. Em’s energy level was incredible, and the sincerity and humility he was feeling was obvious as he thanked the crowd for giving him the chance to do this. It might sound silly, but it was moving. Em performed thirty-three songs and I sang, or screamed, along with all of them. I didn’t realize how exhausting it was until it was over… and then the countdown clock for Jay-Z started.

Jay took the stage speaking the words to the intro to the Dynasty album (“The theme song to The Sopranos plays in the key of life on my, mental piano…”). Kanye West joined Jay on the stage and they launched right into “Run This Town” and “Power”. Nicki Minaj came out next to do “Monster” with Jay and ‘Ye, and then Kanye did “Can’t Tell Me Nothin” and “The Good Life”. Then Swizz Beatz came out to do “On to the Next One” with Jay, which lead to Jay doing “D.O.A., “Lucifer” and “Free Mason” by himself and then “Renegade” with Eminem, which was one of the highlights of a night full of highlights. From there Jay launched into an extended solo set (“Take Over”, “You Don’t Know”, “99 Problems”, “Jigga What”, “Big Pimpin”, and “Hard Knock Life”). Next Jay took a moment to remind us that the anniversary of Tupac’s death just passed, which of course lead to a tribute to Biggie. Jay rapped “One More Chance” and then just said fuck it and asked the crowd to sing along to “Juicy”. Then Jay rapped the lyrics to “A Dream” (which is one of Jay’s most poetic songs, in which he recounts a dream he had where Biggie spoke to him – it’s also one of my favorite Jay-Z songs). Then Jay did “Public Service Announcement” before bringing out none other than Mary J. Blige. Monday night got the dude from Coldplay, we got Mary J. We won. Mary sang the chorus to “Ain’t No Love” while Jay rapped bthe lyrics, and then Jay gave Mary the stage to take us “way back”. I really was hoping for “Real Love” but we got “I’m Goin Down” instead, which was ok because Mary killed it. Next Jay introduced Drake and Nicki Minaj came back out to do “Up All Night” with him. Then Jay did “Light Up” with Drake. Next Beyonce came out, looking stunning and sounding amazing, to sing the chorus to “Young Forever”. After that it was Jay solo again to do “Already Home”, “Empire State of Mind”, “Thank You”, “Jigga That Nigga”, “Izzo”, “Best of Me”, “You, Me, Him, and Her”, “Where I’m From” and “Dirt Off Your Shoulder” before closing with “I Just Wanna Love You”.

By the end of the show I was drained. Euphoric, but drained. Witnessing history and knowing it can be a tiring experience. Singing along at the top of your lungs the entire time is downright exhausting. At one point during the night, while he was talking about the historical significance of the night, Jay-Z introduced DJ Kool Herc who, if you don’t know, is one of the pioneers of hip-hop from the late 70’s… he practically invented break beat DJing. If you want more of a history lesson google him, I’m too fuckin tired to explain how legendary he is. Jay told a story which sounded like bullshit about running into Kool Herc outside Yankee stadium and insisting he attend the show. Well maybe it wasn’t, because after we walked to the car and grabbed some drinks from a bodega, we saw Kool Herc walking home.

The night really was surreal, and a hip-hop lover’s dream. Because this is Perpetual Dissatisfaction and all this down-home nice boy shit makes me uncomfortable, I do have a few complaints. Well not really, but there’s a list of a hundred songs I wish they’d done, especially given the guest stars in attendance. No “’03 Bonnie and Clyde”? No “Watch Me” with Dr. Dre? No “Reasonable Doubt” with Mary? Really? I guess it’s a testament to what excellent showmen both guys are that they gave so much and still left me wanting more. I wanted to say something real controversial like if you missed this show you’re not a real hip-hop fan, but honestly the tickets weren’t cheap and they went quick, so I can’t say that honestly. I can say you missed something special though. You can bet that, if given another opportunity to see either of these guys live, I’ll definitely be in the audience.

Some Great New Music To End Your Summer On...

The summer is rapidly approaching an end, and I thought I should hit you with a few new songs that will be sure to take us into the Fall season. My musical taste can be a bit fickle at times, but I would love to here your comments on the next few songs... so make sure you add some comments below.

First up, we got multi-Grammy award winner John Legend checking in off of his new team up album with the hardest working band in show business, The Roots. They get an assist from the lovely voiced Melanie Fiona and the always on point Common in this re-imagining of the Marvin Gaye classic "Wake Up Everybody", which is one of my all time favorite songs... ever. This is sure to be a dope album, so be on the lookout for it.

Next up, we got a follow up to his summer smash "Airplanes" from new artist B.O.B. and this time he gets a bit of chorus help from Rivers Cuomo of Weezer. You might recognize this one from the new Adidas commercial "Mega Diner" which we featured in Commercially Acclaimed a few weeks back. B.O.B is a great new artist coming out of the ATL, so you will be hearing plenty of this catchy tune in the next few weeks.

Third up, we got the latest single from Usher's new album "Versus", Hot Toddy ft. Jay-Z and Esther Dean. this song has been buzzing for a bit now, but it is just now starting to get some radio airplay and I am sure a video is soon to follow. For now, enjoy this Youtube fan vid of the RnB banger from two titans in the game.

Last up, we got the first single off of Kid Cudi's new album called "Erase Me" and this one features a guest verse from the always controversial Kanye West. This is a banger for sure, and I am really looking forward to Cudi's sophmore album. Lets hope this is just the start of something great.

OHC of the Day: Dania Ramirez

Oh my, my, my... Ms. Ramirez, how you have grown before our eyes!!! Dania has been around for a minute, but due to her recent role on the HBO hit show Entourage, she is about to break out. She played Calisto in X-Men 3 and had a sexy hero/villian fight with Halle Berry. She also had a small part in the last season of the Sopranos and played Maya Herrea on NBC's Heroes. She was also a video girl, appearing in Jay-Z's song Streets Is Watching and LL Cool J's Hush. She is also a favorite of director Spike Lee, and appeared in his movies She Hate Me and The 25th Hour. Next up you can catch her in hubby Jesse Terrero's next film Brooklyn to Manhattan & alongside Joseph Gordon Levitt and fellow hotness (and possible future OHC) Jaime Chung in Premium Rush, both to be released soon. Oh Dania, slow down ma, you killin' em!!! Betty White to Host Tonight's SNL's Mothers Day Special

Tonight, 5/8/2010, Betty White will be the host of Saturday Night Live. The musical guest will be Jay-Z, and all the former female cast members of the last decade or so are set to make guest appearences (think Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, etc.) in an star-packed episode dedicated to Mothers Day. But that is not what makes this great. This is all a result of an online push to get White named as host of the long running show. A Facebook page was started, putting forth the crazy idea to have the 86 year old actress as a host, and it snowballed. After the popularity of her Snickers commercial during this years Super Bowl, people got behind the idea of everybodies favorite Golden Girl hosting... even when she had second thoughts about it. Lorne Michaels saw how many people wanted to see this happen, so he made the executive decisions that lead to tonights show. Tune in, because I am sure this episode is going to be one of the classics... Show starts at 11:30... enjoy!!!

Beyonce and Jay: The Couple That Choreographs Together, Stays Together

Beyonce and Jay-Z are the biggest celebrity couple on the planet earth right now. They are both huge superstar celebrities, and they both have become extremely great performers over their respective careers. But they are an intensly private couple, and over the years they have been cautious not to share too much information about their relationships with the public. But little by little, that is begining to change. At the Grammys, Beyonce thanked her husband from the podium, something they NEVER EVER DO. Then we have this interview with British TV host Johnathan Ross. Jay dishes on being married to Miss B, how they spent their Valentines Day, and even the input that they have on each others career. Jay goes on to tell Ross that he is responsible for the "Uh-Oh" dance from Crazy in Love and the "Hand Waving Dance" from Put A Ring On It, two of Beyonce's biggest singles. I'm sure he is kidding around, but maybe he is telling the truth. Can you imagine Hova and B, sitting home on on Tuesday in their livingroom, working out new routines and battling each other on the dance floor... that would be hilarious. Below is the whole clip of Jays interview on Johnathan Ross. Hope these two stay together, and I feel they will because they don't let the public all up in their lives. Jay liked it, then he put a ring on it... sorry fellas, looks like Lady B is spoken for and quite happy!!! It's good to see couples like this making it in this day and age.

Gone But Not Forgotten... Big L Rest In Peace!!!

11 years ago today, music fans all over the world were robbed of one of the greatest rappers to ever touch a mic. Unfortunately, average music fans still don't even know who Big L is, let alone just how good he was at his craft. You can shout out all the MC's you want in the quest to name the best ever, but if your list is missing Big L then it can't be taken seriously. Being a hip hop head in NYC during the early 90's, I was a huge Big L fan. He was one of my favorite rappers and "Put It On" is one of my favorite all time rap songs. He also was in a "supergroup" called Children of the Corn with future hip hop stars Mase, Cam'ron, Bloodshed and McGruff. Even though he had a huge underground following and some mediocre mainstream success, L was poised to blow up before his untimely murder took him from this earth. Longtime friend Jay-Z was about to sign him to a record deal with Roc-A-Fella records that would have finally given L the exposure he deserved. Unfortunately, his art was imitated in his life and he was shot 9 times...

Here are some videos of Big L that will serve a dual purpose. If you know who Big L is and what he is all about, these videos will no doubt bring a smile to your face as you reminisce like Pete Rock and Cl Smooth. If you never heard of Big L, here is an intro to one of the greatest rappers to ever spit a bar on a mic. Go out and cop his two albums, Lifestylez of the Poor and Dangerous and The Big Picture. Also, get on Youtube and listen to many of the 100's of freestyles that L laid down. He is nice with it.

To quote my man Guru of Gangstarr fame, "Big L, Big L, Big L... Rest In Peace"

The 1st Annual "C-C-Drammy" Awards Result Show

So, last nights Grammy Awards were a wonderful suprise. The performances were amazing, the speeches of the winners were heartfelt and the Academy of Music seemed to really get it right this year. As for my C-C-Drammy predictions, I did pretty well. In the 4 major categories, I guessed 2 winners. I was correct in picking Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" as the Record of the Year. I also guessed Beyonce's "Single Ladies" would take down the Single of the Year. In the Album of the Year category, I thought Lady Gaga was impossible to beat... but youngster Taylor Swift was not to be taken lightly. She cruised to a victory in that category, suprising many people with winning the biggest category of the night. I was also incorrect about Keri Hilson winning Best New Artist, as she lost in that category to the Zack Brown Band (Who the F$#K is That). Overall, CCD did pretty well in the major categories and were happy with the way everything shook out.

The performances were great, starting with Lady Gaga and Elton John and finishing with Drake, Lil Wayne, and Eminem ft. Travis Barker. These two performances were awesome and made watching the show worth the 3 1/2 hours it encompassed. Mary J Blige and Andrea Boccelli killed it, as did Beyonce. The tribute to Michael Jackson was nice, and The Black Eyed Peas also repped hard. I would have liked to see Jay-Z up there, but there is always next year. Signing of from the Grammys, we'll see you at the next awards show with our predictions....

Is Jay-Z Really Going To Buy Llamas For The Whole Hood???

So, I'm sure there are more then a few of you guys trying to figure out where I'm going with this post. You see, one of my favorite parts of the past presidential election was all of the rap lyrics that began to focus on the first black candidate to ever run for the presidency. Everybody from Kanye to Young Jeezy got in on the Obama name dropping, and this practice continues still as we enter year two of the "Age of Obama". But my favorite lyric by far came from Brooklyn boy Shawn Carter, also know as the one and only Jay-Z. In his freestyle over Lil Wayne's track "A Milli", Young Hov renamed the track "A Billi" and rapped about all the royalties he has accumulated over the years. But His biggest boast, even though it didn't seem so at the time, involved our president. In a declaration towards the change that would be coming under the newly appointed commander in chief, Mr. Carter dropped the following gem:

"So Brrrrrack, lick a shot, for Barack Obama, Change gon come-ah, If not, I'ma buy the whole hood llamas on me!!!"

For those of you who don't speak street, basically Jay told us to pop shots in the air to celebrate the change Barack Obama was going to bring America as president. And if for some reason Barack didn't change anything after the election, he promised to buy the whole hood guns (llamas, cause they spit bullets) to force that change. Well, its been a year, and so far not much has changed. Well, that's not totally true. Massachusetts, the most blue state in the country, just got their first republican senator in 47 years. I guess that's change, just not the kind democrats were hoping for. Good thing Mr. Hova has all that cash...

Jay's home borough of Brooklyn NY has about 3 million people residing in it, and NYC's population has swelled to over 8.5 million. That's alot of guns to provide, and even more to buy all those bullets... Good thing Jay-z is caked up. Looks like Beyonce might have to start settling for the Steve Madden Tims and Burberry for more then swimming...Lol!!! I included the youtube video of the freestyle, pay close attention at about the one minute mark.
