So a perfect bow on the month of October here at CCD would have to be a ".5" episode honoring what Rob & I feel like is one of the best original horror movies of the last 20 years... Cabin In The Woods! Drew Goddard & Joss Whedon drive home a great film, and we thought we needed to bring it up to give the movie it's proper due. Just a nice little way to wrap up the 2014 All Horror Week here at CCD, and an excuse to watch one of the great horror movies of not only the last 20 years but possibly the next 20 years... Lionsgate Wins April Fools Day This Year.... Wow!!!

Lionsgate is a Canadian independent film production/distribution company that just so happens to be the most successful mini-major studio in North America. It has been key in the development of some of the greatest franchises over the last 20 years... think Twilight, Hunger Games, Saw, etc. But it has always been a key contributor to the horror genre, and boy have they added some classics through the years. American Psycho, Hostel, the many Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboots (I would argue they are the BEST reboots out of all the horror reboots), High Tension, The Midnight Meat Train, You're Next, The aforementioned Saw films, Cabin In The Woods and House of a 1,000 Corpses/The Devil's Rejects are just a few of the banging horror movies that Lionsgate have put out over the last 25 years. So when it came time for the people who control Lionsgate's Instagram/Facebook accounts (they have a ton of FBook accounts for each specific movie and their Instagram covers all their releases), they dug deep into their own personal character archive to compile a 'Who's Who' list of the most heinous monsters & madman for a fake movie entitled 'Fright Club'! What a great idea... take some of the worst baddies ever and have them take on innocent victims in a winner take all fight club type of setting... I WOULD WATCH THE SHIT OUT OF THAT! They tapped Patrick Bateman, the horned helmet dude from Hostel, Jigsaw, Otis, Leatherface, the ballerina girl from Cabin in the Woods, as well as a few more (I think those little kids under Bateman are from The Strangers, but I could be wrong)... oh, and is that the famous Leprechaun lurking in the shadows??? A great idea for a perfect April Fools joke. The coolest thing for an April Fools joke is if people truly believe it... and just by checking out the comments on the posts you can see just how much people either believe this or wish it could be true! A to Z Blogger Challenge 2013: Day 3 - C is for Cabin In The Woods!!!

Day three in the 2013 A to Z Blogger Challenge, and boy it feels good! I am having a great time with my topic, which for those of you guys who haven't seen day 1 and day 2 consist of me picking a movie that begins with the letter of the day and then highlighting one of the beautiful actresses in that movie through pictures. I am using my C spot to take a look in at my favorite movie of last year, Cabin In The Woods. Most notably, female lead Kristen Connolly. I loved Connolly as final girl Dana, and I think she was a fantastic choice by geek god Joss Whedon. He certainly knows how to pick his female stars, and has been fantastic at doing so in the past (Sarah Michelle Gellar, Christina Hnedricks, and Eliza Duhku just to name a few). he totally knocks it out of the park with Connolly. She is fresh faced, has beautiful red hair and light eyes, and has proven herself to be a very good young actress. So I have big hopes for her in the future. But her place in my heart will always be cemented due to her participation in Cabin In The Woods. Vintage VHS Box Art by Frank Browning For Freddy In Space

I have long extolled Freddy In Space as one of my favorite blogs on the 'Net, and by far one of the best horror blogs around. One reason is because my main man Johnny that runs the site is a gentleman and a scholar... lol. But the other reason is that Johnny embraces his role a s a little guy in a big industry, and he realizes that he can't compete with huge blogs for things like exclusive content and set visits. So he sets out to create some original content that is unique to his blog, and he does this by collaborating with very talented people. One of the people he is working with on some of these projects is Frank Browning. Browning is a very talented artists that creates magnificent retro style art with a very unique touch. So he was the perfect choice by Johnny to create VHS styled boxes for modern horror classics that obviously never have been released in VHS format. This is a really cool concept because one of the coolest aspects of renting videos was definitely browsing the boxes at your local mom & pop video store. I have chosen to watch countless movies through the years based on their VHS box art, so seeing some of my favorite modern horror movies getting the 80s retro box art treatment is fantastic. The thing I love about these has to be the various shots that are highlighted... it is not like modern DVD art that rely on one or two pictures, but rather 6-8 smaller photos that may not be of the most important elements from the movie. Take the Trick 'r Treat box for example, which chooses to highlight vampire Anna Paquin and some of the other lesser known characters on the cover and leaves main attraction Sam for a back of the box shot. I am eagerly awaiting round 2 of these, and Johnny has solicited requests in the comment section for movies we would want to see receive this treatment from Browning. Mike D's Favorite 11 Movies of 2012: A CCD Rant

The year is over and I was one happy camper when it came to movies released in 2012. I am a huge movie fanatic and this was an amazing year for films to me. Big blockbusters, small indy movies... we got good stuff from across the board of genres and film types. We also must celebrate the year of the geek, lead by Mr. Joss Whedon. Comic book movies reached an all time high, Sci Fi made a huge comeback, and smaller companies like Magnet Releasing  helped make it easier for us to see lesser known works. Thanks to streaming services like Hulu Plus, Video on Demand, Amazon Prime and my beloved Netflix Instant films were easier to access as ever and were right at our fingertips on all the electronic devices we love so much. So here is my top 11 fims of 2012. Not the best films, not the definitive list... just my favorite 11 films that I HAVE SEEN THIS YEAR. And I know it's 11, that is what makes my list better then those stupid ass Top ten lists out there!!!! Enjoy my rant after the jump...

Cabin In The Woods by Blaine Hefner

Cabin In The Woods was one of my favorite films of the year. I loved it so much. But when I see it being used in pieces by artists in their own interpretations, I get positively giddy. Check out this fantastic piece by artist Blaine Hefner. It was part of a cool ass art show called Monsters, Movies & The Dude that took place last month in Salt Lake City. Cabin In The Woods by Hopko Design

Cabin In The Woods is a polarizing flick... people either love it or they hate it. I have heard more people express that they liked it, but it does have some detractors. One thing is for certain, it is full of originality. Joss Whedon brought the fuck with a great story, and Drew Goddard directed a hell of a good film. I love the cast, and I especially love the everyday workers at The Company (if you haven't seen the movie you don't know who I am talking about... but if you have, I only have two words: Mer Men!!!!) who make the film so awesome. Richard Jenkins & Bradley Whitford steal the show, and they also happen to be the inspiration for Hopko Design's alternate version of the movie poster. This one is dope!!! Cabin In The Woods by Griffin Hartter

If you are a regular reader here on CCD (or some of the other cool kids websites around the web) then you will be extremely familiar with the work of Sean Hartter. The guy has some serious talent, and we have become  pretty good friends due to the relationship that we have developed after I found and re-posted his dope artwork. The guy just makes awesome artwork and is uber talented. So I was super excited when Sean sent me a poster for Cabin In The Woods that was not done by him, but rather his 17 year old son Griffin!!! Wow... wow! Looks like the apple didn't fall far from the tree, huh? Grif got his design up on the Fuck Yeah Movie Poster Tumblr page, and I have to say that I am looking for much more from little Hartter in the future.
