This past Super Bowl wasn't much of a game, at least not the one we were promised. The #1 Offense of the Denver Broncos were completely shut down by the oppressive #1 Defense of the Seattle Seahawks in what quickly went from a potential battle for the ages to the laughing stock of all big games. I have heard countless stories from people who were multi-tasking while "watching" (aka not paying attention) to the game. Seems like graphic artist John Raya may have had some time on his hands, and he whipped up 32 sweet Star Wars themed football helmets to represent all the teams in the NFL. Some are no brainers, like the green Philly Eagles becoming the Yoda's or the black & silver Raiders becoming the Vaders. But others are much more clever, like the Broncos as the Hoth Taun Taun's... an ironic choice, considering how fierce they were all season and how they got butchered up in the SB. This video has apparently been out for about a week, but I just saw it on ESPN this morning and it cracked me up. It features Taylor Lautner of Twilight fame as a second coming of Kevin Costner's Field Of Dreams character. He builds a football field in the middle of Iowa and all of the sudden locked out NFL superstars start showing up. Hijinks ensues.... very funny stuff. I love Ray Lewis tackling the shit out of everyone. Much better then his old practice of murdering people during Super Bowl weekend. You gotta love the cameos from vets such as Ray Liotta (who was in the real Field Of Dreams) and Dennis Haysbert as well... and Marielle Jaffe can get it!!!! Look for the special cameo at the end. The commercials are some of the best parts of the Super Bowl. Very rarely does the big game live up to the hype... usually there is a blowout. This years game was very good, but the commercials were awesome as always. Here are the ones that I like the best:
Audi - Release The Hounds
This one is hysterical... showing how luxurious an Audi can be. Props for the crazy stunts, the dodo, and for really getting Kenny G for the commercial. That was great.
Eminem - Brisk Ice Tea (I got some demands)
I always loved the Brisk commercials that featured real people in claymation form... the Sinatra & Rocky ones were some of the best. But this one is quite funny, and to be straightforward it is probably the truest commercial I have ever seen. Can't you see Em asking for this stuff??? I could...

Doritos - House Sitting
That magical Doritos dust sure can accomplish a lot.... this one is quite funny from the perennial powerhouse that is Doritos.
Chevy - Cast of Glee Sings "See The USA"
I am a big fan of the show Glee, and love the way that Chevy chose to use the cast in this campaign. It started with a 30 second teaser spot outlining Sue Sylvester's latest plot to sabotage the Glee Club, and the second one being the full 2 minute Chevy video. Great job from a great show. One question: Where is Shue, Quinn, and Finn???
But my favorite commercial of the day goes to the NFL:
NFL - Best Fans Ever
Wow... the NFL salutes its fans all over the country by going back and superimposing league apparel onto characters from your favorite TV shows. Norm in a Pats jersey, The Fonz in a Packers jersey, Marsha Brady getting smacked in the nose wearing a San Diego Chargers shirt... this one was great. Plus, you gotta love them for including South Park at the end. Great job.

Being more of class clown/nerd growing up, I never really got into the sports, let alone football specifically. Everything I know about football I learn during the biggest football spectacular of the year...the Super Bowl! All that being said, the highlight of the event, for me, is always the commercials. In general, I think they weren't as awesome as they have been in past years. There weren't many that I thought created a 'water cooler' moment for me at work on Monday morning, wherein I just COULD NOT WAIT to discuss them like I have in past years. Oh but, the ones that were hit the mark were just incredible! Here's my favorites of the bunch.
Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 'Anachronistic City'- Love the visual of all the the world's inventions stuck together in the same time frame with each other. This one just pieced together like a work of art for me. ! Can't say that I'm in the market for a Sonata but, great job, Hyundai!
Bridgestone 'Carma'- Wasn't sure what to make of this one until that furry little beaver gave himself a chest pound. Good lookin' out, buddy
Cars.com 'The Reviews Are In'- Disney's 'Cars' for grownups. What's not to love?
Kia Optima 'One Epic Ride'- This one played out like a great time travel film. The CGI was top of the line and touched on everything I like in a great Sci-Fi film. I'm amazed how far they pushed it for a little ol' Kia commercial spot.
Volkswagen 'The Force'- As a 'Star Wars' fan, I couldn't get enough! My favorite part is how, obviously, vexxed the young Vader impersonator becomes after trying to move the food atop the counter. An emotion that bleeds through even the heavy costume and helmet. I'd like to point out how oddly the Star Wars mythos is playing out these days. This ad is just another instance that shows how Darth Vader/Anakin is the hero of choice now that the prequels have taken hold of a new generation of Star Wars tikes. Back when I was young..we'd be pretending we were Han Solo, Luke...or even Yoda! Today..it's Vader. I'm eager to see how the Star Wars phenomena mutates within the next couple of decades now that there is a whole new generation of kids being raised with a slightly different vision of the franchise. (I know..I know. Deep breaths, Jeff...it was just a Volkswagen commercial!)
Doritos 'The Best Part'- By far THE funniest of the evening. This one came out of left field and if you missed it, I'd rather you just see for yourself. The Doritos company is always on point!

This could be the scene in Feb. 2014... or it could be worse when the Super Bowl makes its FIRST appearance in NY. The NFL announced that the new stadium of the NY Giants and Jets beat out the city of Tampa Bay, Florida for the big game in 2014. While it is not such a surprise that the NFL would want to have the biggest game of the year in the NYC area, it does go against the NFL's policy of having the Super Bowl in a warm weather environment. The game was held in Detroit a few years back, but that was in a dome. What would happen if NY should get pelted with a snow storm? I'll tell you what would happen... it would be freaking awesome!!! I hope it snows 25 inches that week. Sure, that will pretty much guarantee that the NFL will never try a cold weather/open air Big Game ever again, but the fact that we get a chance at a Blizzard Bowl would be worth it!!!
I am a huge sports fan... if the game involves a ball, I usually love it. Football is one of my favorite. Although there are plenty of football players that regular people recognize, most average "non-fans" don't know what they look like because they always are on the field with helmets on. Chad Johnson is a very personable guy, and he is also extremely talented. So after he began to make a name for himself in the NFL as a star reciever, he became discouraged by the fact that nobody recognized him off the field. So he divised a plan to make EVERYONE notice him. He began to celebrate his touchdowns, but he did not go with the average ball spike and high 5 that most guys use. He went out there... way out there. He began a career of making himself a spectacle everytime he scored, and not only that he made himself a spectacle... he was fucking hilarious in doing it. I just watched him on Mike n Mike over at ESPN, and his interview was great. His interviews are always great. Sure, most people think he is a pompous asshole who talks way to much crap, but that is not the case. Chad is just all about having fun. He knows that he is lucky, one of the .0001% of all people that play football in their lives to make it to the NFL. He has been rewarded with millions of dollars and fame. So he plans on enjoying it, and thats what he does. He has never been in trouble with the law, never had incidences of drug or alcohol violations, and even his celebrations never really rub it in to his competitors. He has fun... WTF is so wrong with that??? Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, has fined Chad 100's of times (see the pic above)... but he does not care about fines. They go to charity, so he feels like its all for a good cause. So he keeps acting like only he can, then cuts the check after he is done. Below is a clip of some of his celebrations throughout his career. It's set to Kayne West's "Stronger" and gives you just how funny Ochocinco can be. My favorite is when he breaks into a full on Riverdance after scoring a touchdown. But thats not the best part... he actually studied Irish folkdancing for 3 weeks before he busted his moves out during a game!!! If your gonna do something, do it right.
