The CCD Podcast: Episode #99 - Howard the Duck: The 30th Anniversary Eggstravaganza!!!

Man o man... on paper, the film version of Howard the Duck should have been a home run! A hit comic character that was HAND PICKED by lord commander George Lucas for adaption... effects by Industrial Lights and Magic, the best in the biz... a huge cast, featuring 80s stalwarts like Lea Thompson, Tim Robbins and Jeffrey Jones... I mean, how could this go wrong??? I don't exactly know, but it certainly did go wrong. VERY WRONG. Widely considered one of the worst films ever created and a box office flop, HTD was relegated to the designation of "misstep" by George Lucas and crew. But over time, a cult following around the film began to build. It found new life on cable throughout the 90s and 2000s, and nowadays is considered one of the biggest cult classics of the 80s!

So with the 30th Anniversary rolling around, we felt like we should try to host an event highlighting this fun film. So we teamed up with Den of Geek to do just that... on 8/26/16 we will invade Dromedary Bar in Brooklyn for a crazy event. And because its us, we decided to host a podcast talking about everything Howard: comics, movies and beyond! The eve of the release of Guardians of the Galaxy is upon us, so you know the CCD Podcast gang had to tackle the unique genre the film fits in... Space Operas!!! Guardians is very unique in the sense that it is a space set, buddy team up, comedic ensemble film that exists in a very small group of films. So we decided to talk about the films that were similar to this from the past: Think 'Krull', 'The Last Starfighter', 'Flight of the Navigator', 'Galaxy Quest', and the like. It is a fun filled trip down space movie memory lane... so why not join us and celebrate this seldom used genre on the verge of its biggest movie release yet? Kraven the Duck Hunter by Brendan Tobin

Wow Brendan Tobin ... you are definitely an artist that gets the concept of a mashup. Not only do you get it, but you get it on another level. Tobin created a piece entitled 'Kraven the Duck Hunter', digitized it in all the 8 bit glory of the original Nintendo cartridge, and features everybodies favorite foul talking mallard Howard the Duck. Great piece... I think I want to get this on a T shirt!!! Check it out after the jump...

'The All Winners Squad': Marvel New Web Series Will Highlight Some Of It's Lesser Known Characters

Marvel just keeps making all the right decisions lately, in every aspect of their empire. They are riding high off the mega hit that was The Avengers, are gearing up to start phase 2 of their cinematic releases (Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Cap 2, Guardians of the Galaxy, and eventually Avengers 2), have some interesting TV prospects in the works (Guillermo Del Torro's Hulk series, Jessica Jones, etc) , and are wrapping up an epic crossover maxi series in their comic books featuring the two biggest superhero teams on the planet, Avengers vs X-Men. Yeah, Joe Quesada & the rest of the big wigs over at Marvel seem to be pulling all the right strings. Now they are taking to the web, and doing so with some not so familiar faces to boot. Their newest project is a web series entitled 'All Winners Squad', and it features some wonderfully obscure Marvel characters such as Howard the Duck, Frog Man, The Walrus, and Squirrel Girl. This rag tag group of heroes are coming together to face equally obscure villains in mini adventures and are being package in a way that will remind viewers of Drawn Together, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, The Boondocks, and the new Black Dynamite cartoon (which is awesome!). The pilot lays out the groundwork for the series, and future episodes are promised to follow shortly. I for one can't wait to see some of the minor characters get some burn. The Comic Pull List: Halloween Edition by James West

Hey kids! On this Comic Book Pull List, I was debating doing Blackest Night or Marvel Zombies…but then I decided that I had already previously reviewed some Blackest Night stuff, and I actually think Marvel Zombies is more depressing than scary. So, I went into my hidden lair (basement), and did some looking around for some good horror/scary comics for you Halloweenies!

MARVEL ZOMBIES vs ARMY OF DARKNESS

Okay, Marvel Zombies is depressing…but Ashley J. Williams killing them is not. The story begins with Ash having died (something from his own comic series that I didn’t read), and waiting in line at the gates of Heaven…but when he turns around, he sees that people in line are currently acting as lunch for a now zombified Sentry. In an attempt to escape, Ash falls into the Marvel Zombies universe…and the sh*t hits the fan from there. Ash’s journey takes him from beating up Daredevil because he thinks he’s a bad guy, to hitting on Scarlet Witch, to accidentally leading to Spider-Man’s infection, to witnessing the version of himself from his world killed (eaten by none other than Howard the Duck), to killing said duck (see above), then going all the way to Latveria to ask for help from none other than Doom himself. Ash thinks the Necronomicon is at work here, and Doom is the one who currently owns it. The mini-series combines the same comedy and horror as Army of Darkness does, and boy is it groovy.

NEAL ADAMS’ MONSTERS

Anyone who’s familiar with comics knows that Neal Adam’s is the MASTER artist. Famous for reinvigorating Green Lantern, Green Arrow, and Batman in the 1970’s along with writer Denny O’Neil, Neal Adams is one of the “big” names in the industry, up there in terms of legendary-ness with Stan Lee, arguably. Adams’ reputation as an artist is definitely not put into question here. The art is stunning as Adams ever was. The redesigns of the monsters are different than those of the Universal Studios classic versions, but are still respectful, and much better than a certain other reimagining of the classic monsters *cough*Van Helsing*cough*. All in all, definitely a fun read, with a pretty awesome battle at the end. Also worth it for the sketches and concept art in the back of the book (I say back, but it’s a pretty hefty portion) that Neal has worked on over the years, including work for movies like Funhouse, From Beyond, and more!

Superman/Batman #77

Superman/Batman is a monthly that focuses not so much on current goings on in the DCU, and really just tells stories about whatever the writer at the time wants. This month’s ish doesn’t star Superman, or Batman, but rather Supergirl and Robin! Supergirl needs help on a case, so she goes to Gotham to find the world’s greatest detective (in this case, Dick Grayson, since Brucie is MIA still). Instead, she finds Damian Wayne, the newest Robin! Damian and Supergirl don’t get along very well…in fact, anyone and Damian don’t get along very well (Except for Batman and Alfred). Damian is a 10 year who acts like a 40 year old, arrogant mastermind…and it’s fantastic! The two team up, infiltrate a Halloween party, run into the Scarecrow (is there a better Batman villain for the Halloween season?), etc, etc. Damian is such a fun character to read, and is an especially a fun character when he’s making fun of Batgirl or Supergirl. Definitely worth it for the interplay!
