TV commercials are a part of our everyday lives as TV viewers. Even though Tivo and DVR have allowed us to "skip through" the commercials, the advertising companies are still trying to peak our interests by coming up with creative commercials. To me, great commercials are an art form and are under appreciated by a society that is always trying to speed through things. Think about it... how many times did you see a great commercial that made you laugh hysterically or want to go out and purchase the advertised product??? And how many times has the best part of the Super Bowl been the commercials during a blow out game??? Whether you want to admit it or not, commercials are cool as shit... and here are some of my favorites.
This weeks spot features two amazing actors, Joe Pesci & Don Rickles craving candy bars that can satisfy their hunger. I love these Snicker commercials, especially the past ones that featured Betty White & Abe Vigoda and Aretha Franklin. Very good idea, and this one is no exception. "What do you model... gloves?" You guys probably remember Rue Mcclanahan as the man crazed Blanche Devereux on The Golden Girls... she was TV original cougar. Playing a 55+ year old women who still liked to get some nookie, her character was the person who owned the house where the other elderly women lived. The show ran from 1985 to 1992, and she won the Emmy award in 1987 as outstanding lead actress. Golden Girls was the second sitcom she had been featured on with Bea Arthur, having previously played Arthur's best friend Vivian on the show Maude. She was also a very successful stage actress. Lets face it... when you were a kid in the 80's, she was the character on TV you knew was getting ass... she was the one you knew was knocking boots. Looking back, that was refreshing, cause often those roles were reserved for men... think Sam Malone (Ted Danson) in Cheers. Rue passed on yesterday after suffering a stroke in NYC. She was 76. She will be missed. This leaves 88 year old Betty White as the sole surviving member of the Golden Girl cast. You will be missed Rue... THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND!!! (I had too...) Tonight, 5/8/2010, Betty White will be the host of Saturday Night Live. The musical guest will be Jay-Z, and all the former female cast members of the last decade or so are set to make guest appearences (think Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, etc.) in an star-packed episode dedicated to Mothers Day. But that is not what makes this great. This is all a result of an online push to get White named as host of the long running show. A Facebook page was started, putting forth the crazy idea to have the 86 year old actress as a host, and it snowballed. After the popularity of her Snickers commercial during this years Super Bowl, people got behind the idea of everybodies favorite Golden Girl hosting... even when she had second thoughts about it. Lorne Michaels saw how many people wanted to see this happen, so he made the executive decisions that lead to tonights show. Tune in, because I am sure this episode is going to be one of the classics... Show starts at 11:30... enjoy!!!
