R.I.P. To H.R. Giger, A True Artistic Genius

H.R. Giger is a Swiss artist who created one of the greatest movie monsters of all time. His works and artistic ideals led to the creation of the Xenomorph, of Alien fame. But the way I came to know and love his work was a bit weirder than that. Giger designed the VIP room in Limelight, the famous NYC nightclub that was so dope during the early 90s. It is the first club I ever went to in my life... at the ripe old age of 14. I was taken by some older friends and spent the first hour in the club wandering around. The coolest part about Limelight had to be that it was a former church. The exterior remained exactly the same, and the interior retained many of the churches original designs (like the altar, which was the DJ booth). But there were a few separate rooms, in which different music was played then the main room. So as a wide eyed kid, I wandered into a VIP room and managed to weasel my way in. As I entered, I was blown away.... the whole rooms walls were decorated with the artistic styling of H.R. Giger! It was crazy in there... and one of the coolest nightclub scenes I have ever seen since. It was the coolest themed room in the whole joint, and in all the years that I would visit Limelight I always tried to pop in there just to catch a glimpse of his magnificent work. Giger has been in the limelight (pun intended.... see what I did there) once again do to the success of Prometheus (which feature some of his early Alien designs) and a new documentary entitled Jodorowsky's Dune, which tells the story of Alejandro Jodorowsky's failed attempt to make a Dune adaption into a movie. Giger was commissioned to bring Frank Herbert's world to life. Unfortunately that never happened... but now we will finally get to see the genius work Giger had planned for us. He died this week after complications from a fall that he endured. Rest in Piece, sir... and thanks for the art! You can see some pics of Giger's room at Limelight after the jump.....

There Is Alien Xenomorph Cosplay... AND THEN THERE IS ALIEN XENOMORPH COSPLAY !!!

I am as much of a fan of cosplay as any other, but there is good cosplay and than there is GREAT COSPLAY. This is an example of great cosplay, and it comes from a source that is extremely close to home for me. Peter Kokis is a performer and builder of fantastic robotic suits of some of your favorite pop culture characters. Think Optimus Prime, The Terminator, the Jaegers from Pacific Rim, etc. And he is based out of Brooklyn, NY... my stomping grounds! His Alien Xenomorph costume may be the very best one yet... and it is super CREEPY! Peter decided to go with the more "warrior" like look of the Alien Xenomorph from Aliens (Alien 2 for you people failing to see the s at the end!) This costume is one of epic proportions, and I can't even begin to get into the specifics of the construct (you can click here for the specs on that particular build). It is the first construct that Peter has made that is not a robot, and shows that he has range as a costume construction expert. And the coolest part: All of Peter's creations can be rented at an hourly rate for performances and appearances. How great is that? The costume took over 400 hours to construct, so giving my dude props here on CCD is the least I can do to show love the Brooklyn way! The Anatomy Of Your Favorite Movie Monsters by Bradwick J McGinty III

Artist Bradwick J McGinty III is a lot more than just a snazzy name. He is a very talented artist who is using his creative powers for good... and by good I mean creating really cool geek shit for us to enjoy. He has created these "Anatomy of..." prints of some of our favorite geek movie monsters in order to show you how these guys tick and what their weak points are. The coolest part? HRG Trooper by Thomas Spanos

The 'As You Wish Helmet Project' is an excellent idea for a charity project. A ton of artists grabbed Star Wars themed helmets (Boba Fett, Clone Troopers, Vader, etc) and personalized them in a unique style... and then these one of a kind helmets will be auctioned off to raise money for the make a wish foundation. They will be highlighted at this years Celebration VI and will be up for auction on August 23rd. One of the coolest pieces I have seen so far has to be Thomas Spanos HRG Trooper helmet, which mashes up Darth Vader with H.R. Giger's Alien Xenomorph.
