I adore Simon Pegg and everything he has done professionally. I also feel like he is a true "geek" in his own personal life and loves the culture as only a true fan from childhood can. So when he appeared on Sirius Radio's show 'Unmasked' and relayed a story about the first time he showed his 3 year old daughter A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, it juts drives home the point that he is someone who "gets it" and should be looked towards for opinions by big wigs on what geeks may want to be included/excluded from projects to come. In honor of the recent pairing of JJ Abrams with Star Wars, I give you the faux trailer for Star Wars: Into Darkness! This is so well done, and I love the fact that he takes the best moments of the original trilogy and Yoda's speech and puts it to JJ type music. So, LucasFilms and Disney have announced that JJ Abrams, of 'Lost' & the new 'Star Trek' franchise fame, will be the director of the seventh full length 'Star Wars' movie. It is set to take place somewhere in the future after the events of the 'Return of the Jedi', may feature some of the familiar characters we love (albeit much older and in a supporting roles) and will sure to be the movie event of 2015 alongside 'Avengers 2'. While I love me some JJ and am actually really excited for another set of Star Wars movies, I can't help but have some trepidation. So here is a little bit of a rant on why I think it could be good, but also 3 reasons why this could be disastrous. Lets delve in, shall we...
I came across this awesome photo over at Dorkly .com and wanted to try and suss out more of a backstory by going to the original page where it was posted, but I have spent the last 45 minutes surfing over at the DrediKnight's webpage and found no site of it amidst the reggae and snowboarding pics that dot the page. But even though I couldn't get a backstory on this awesome photo, it doesn't take much information to know that this may be one of the greatest examples of group cosplay in the history of conventions. the Red Shirts are the poor souls who are members of Star Fleet and are usually the ones who die on Star Trek. They are the expendable henchmen that keep the crew in working order for the writers who have to kill someone, and can't exactly kill of Captain Kirk or Spock. JJ Abrams also gave them a nod in his film when all the cadets (including a young Kirk & Spock) wore Red Shirts while they were at Star Fleet Academy. But where do all those dead Red Shirts go... or better yet, where do they go once they have risen from the dead??? Comic Con of course!!!! Check out this dope photo after the jump...
I was watching The Wind and The Lion, an action adventure from the seventies starring Sean Connery, Candice Bergen and Brian Kieth as Teddy Roosevelt. The movie reminded me of the Robot named Boilerplate and how he was digitally inserted into 19th century history in the terrific faux textbook about the adventurous robot soldier. I was happy to hear that J.J. Abrams has decided to put the film version of the book into production.
We are reaching the point in that fall TV schedule when shows go on mid-season hiatus and networks bring in mid-season replacements for shows that under performed (only 3 episodes for Charlies Angels & Playboy Club... really???). One of the most anticipated mid-season additions is 'Alcatraz', the new show from uber genius JJ Abrams. The first official teaser trailer (30 seconds... C'MON!!!) has leaked and it has piqued my interest... so here are 5 reasons why I think you should give the show a shot come January. As if everyones favorite producer/director JJ Abrams doesn't have enough on his plate with new sitcom Undercovers starting this week, Star Trek 2 and Super 8 on the movie horizon, and 6 million other projects that he is attached to... he has now also taken on the role of trying to create a cop show featuring the two top Lost cast members, Terry "Locke" O'Quinn and Michael "Ben" Emerson. God I hope this happens, and if it does, lets hope Emerson can use the smoke monster as a weapon like in the picture above!!! No seriously though, I think these guys can work well together. If they are given the right type of show with a well written script, they will definetly rock the shit out of it. There was also a rumor last week that Abrams was attached to a Alcatraz based show... maybe they will be cops on Alcatraz??? Who knows... but I can not wait to see!!!
Super 8 - Written & Directed by JJ Abrams and Produced by Steven Spielberg
Unless some of you herbwhorevors have yet to see Iron Man 2 or somehow managed to avoid the latest internet bizbuzz, you should know that Super 8 is Mr. JJ Abrams’s (Alias/Lost/Mission Impossible 3) latest trailer bait. Based on this so called teaser I am far from impressed, kids. Not even Stevie Spielberg’s name being splashed around can get my geek mojo aroused. Call me Ms. High Expectations but when I hear the word “teaser” I’m expecting something so delicious that it makes the ole bean move beneath my britches. So in those terms, this one and a half minute man hardly does that. What it does frankly, is remind me of an unpleasant memory in my movie viewing history.
I am immediately taken back to the summer of 2007. I was sitting in the very uncomfortable front row of the UA Midway movie theater on Queens Blvd. (bless you, Fandango for saving my infinite purchase history). My usual order of Junior Mints and H20 are in hand and I am patiently waiting for the cinematic shitstorm known as Transformers to begin. At that moment a trailer showing a bunch of NYC hipster douches throwing some party comes on. Their bulimic cokefest is then crashed by an earthquake, some Godzilla roars, followed by raining fireballs and the Statue of Liberty’s dome piece. The trailer abruptly ends with “01-18-08.” The next day, a whole internet frenzy ensues of dorks desperately trying to figure out the ambiguity behind 01-18.08. A few phony websites were constructed to keep the hype alive for 6 painful months, unlocking clues and clips of what this story was. 01/18/08 arrives and Cloverfield is a success. An ordinary one but a success nonetheless.
Fast forward two years later to….Super 8! (another working title I presume)…
While this time it’s a reckless douche in a pick up that causes the fireball party, I can’t help but feel that this is all so Cloverfield 2 to me. And for all we know, maybe it is or even a prequel for that matter. Whatever the case may be (no LOST pun intended), without more to go on here I can’t escape the feeling of this being more of the same. And since theaters are just flooded with terrible remakes and unnecessary sequels (::ahem:: Sex And The City TWO), I personally can’t take anymore repeat offenders right now. On the flip side, I do hope I’m all wrong about this and the next trailer takes a refreshing turn.
If you just happen to be someone who doesn’t really care about all that nonsense and just loves a good dose of movie déjà vu then you’ll be thrilled to hear that JJ & Co. have also created (surprise!) a website to keep the fun mystery hype alive until the movie’s release sometime in 2011. The wonderful blognerds over at www.fearnet.com have been so kind to do a little leg work & shed some informative light on the trailer’s “hidden message-turned website” and what it all means. So my CCD pals, until JJ drops me a more informative trailer or a few thirsty nerds ban together and crack open more intriguing clues to the plot, my anticipation for this one remains a solid “big deal.”
This is the final season of Lost, and this week we get not only our regular Tuesday hour episode, but the epic 2.5 hour season finale on Sunday May 23rd. Since this is so important to many members of the CCD staff and our loyal readers, we here at CCD have declared the week of May 17th- May 23rd "Lost Week". We will be providing you with tons of content that relates to Lost, as well as Jeff Bonds last recap before the series finale. We also have some plans to announce a huge collaborative project here at CCD that we want all of our readers to be a part of.
