Rocket Raccoon: A Musical Parody by Animfantastic x Town In The City

When I was a kid, my dad would play the Beatles constantly.... In the car, at the house... always with The Beatles. I developed quite a love for the Fab 4, but there was one song in particular that always held a soft spot for me. 'Rocky Raccoon'. I don't know why, but the songs lyrics (although dealing with adult themes of relationships, adultery and gun play) are quite appealing to kids. Maybe it is the sing-songy melody of the tune, or the drawl that Paul is using when singing the lyrics. Whatever it is, the song just jumped out of their catalog to me as a favorite. So, years later when I encountered Rocket Raccoon in the pages of Marvel comics it was hard to ignore the influences of the 'Rocky Raccoon' song over the character and story arc. Rocket is dating Lylla (like Lylla in the song), they are searching out a sacred book called Gideon's Bible (a direct reference to the song), and his best friend is a walrus named Wal Rus (clearly a link to the walrus of 'The Magical Mystery Tour' album). No wonder I always was drawn to the character of Rocket in the comics. Bill Mantlo and Keith Giffen create a magical character and world that was clearly rooted in the Beatles music... which is amazing! So when I came across this great video finally acknowledging the links by mashing up the two... well, I was sold immediately. Animfantastic teams up with Town In The City to produce the video, and while it is silly... who cares? It is a song about a talking Raccoon after all, so isn't is supposed to be silly? Enjoy the mashup after the jump...

The Transformers Get Their Sgt Pepper On!!!

I love it when comic books take a queue from other pop culture properties for covers. It doesn't have to relate to the story or the comic itself, but if done correctly could portray the comic characters in a fun way. Case in point: Issue #12 of IDW Comics Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye. Artist Nick Roche decided to channel the original Big 4, The Beatles, and have the Autobots & Decepticons get their Sgt. Pepper on. Now I don't read this comic and apparently Optimus is not around in the storyline (I don't know why), but I sure do know a cool cover when I see one. And this is it. Thanks to my main man Dan from It's A Dan World for keeping me in the comic book loop. Check out the cover after the jump....

Wu Tang Wednesday: My Heart Gently Weeps

Hey gang... it's Wednesday!!! That means its time for some Wu Tang!!! Today I am featuring a cool cut off the "8 Diagrams" album entitled 'My Heart Gently Weeps'. the video features a sexy ass geisha girl and is a cover of the Beatles classic 'My Guitar Gently Weeps'. Great song, great video... and as an added bonus, I have also include a bonus clip with the Rza talking about the making of the track. Enjoy both clips after the jump...

Jim Jeroo Does Some Star Wars Mashups That Would Even Make The Emperor Proud

James Hance, aka Jim Jeroo, is a great artist... that's not really anything to debate. But the thing I love about his work is the direction he takes when he decides what he wants to create. While he has tons of artwork on his website featuring classic movie and comic book characters, I have chosen to focus on some of his 'Star Wars' pieces. These are great. Hope you like them. Get over to Jim's site by clicking here... he has prints for sale for $10!

OHC of the Day: TV Carpio

With a name like TV, its no wonder that Miss Carpio would strive to become famous. It also helps when your mom is a huge singing sensation in Hong Kong and your pops owns a huge textile company. With parents like those you are free to explore some options with your career... and that's just what young Teresa Victoria (TV.... get it?) did. She made some small television appearances on Law & Order, and had a small role in Spike Lee's She Hate Me. She also had a run on Broadway in the play Rent. Then her life changed for the best. She was cast in the all Beatles musical movie Across The Universe, and she played a character by the name of Prudence alongside stars Jim Sturgess & Evan Rachel Wood. She sang a wonderful rendition of I Want To Hold Your Hand (see the video below!!!). That role would open up one of the biggest opportunities of TV's career. The director of the Academy & Golden Globe nominated film, Julie Taymor, would ambitiously (and some would say insanely) develop Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark with collaborators Bono & The Edge of U2. The Broadway musical is the most expensive stage show EVER (over 65 mil!!!) and is experiencing quite a few ups and downs as it tries to gain its footing for a 2010 holiday opening. Carpio plays one of the many villains in the play, Miss Arrow. Whether or not the play is a success is going to be one of the seasons greatest questions, but either way TV's career is on the upswing. Besides her commitment to Turn Off The Dark, you can catch her alongside Robert DeNiro & Bradley Cooper in  Neil Burger's next film Limitless, in which she shares some steamy moments with the heartthrob from The Hangover. Who said that to much TV was bad for you??? With high profile performances like these, she won't be an Obscure Hot Chick for very long!!!
