Gadgets & Gizmos: An Art Show @ Bottleneck Galleries, Brooklyn

Bottleneck Galleries is one of the first galleries to be opened in NY that primarily focuses on pop culture themed art shows. The gang over there has an excellent eye for cool pieces, a ton of great ideas for show possibilities, and a work ethic that keeps the exhibits opening soon after one closes. Hot of the finale of the 'Alternate Endings' show comes 'Gizmos & Gadgets', an art show that focuses on the machines & technology of some of your favorite movies of all time. Ripley's front loader mech suit from Alien? Yup. Gob's Segeway from Arrested Development? Yup. Numerous Batman gadgets from his utility belt? Most definitely. Inspector Gadgets whole body, diagrammed X-Ray style? Oh yeah! These are just a few of the wacky and wild illustrations you will find in the collection for this show. The show opened  on January 18th and runs through February 3rd, so try to get yourself down there and buy one of these cool pieces of art. The prices for the last show were relatively affordable, so hopefully you can find something in your price range to bring home and support local artists at the same time! Iron Mike Tyson Makes The Rounds For Oscar Time

I love the fact that Mike Tyson is finding his sense of humor in his retired years. After co-starring in The Hangover and appearing on Entourage, he has appeared in a ton of sketches for websites like Break.com and Funny or Die. Now that it was Oscar time, it seemed like Mike was the go to guy for some of the funnier skits to come out in the last few days. In case you missed them, here they are.

First, we got Funny or Die's "Oscar Talk with Leonard Maltin" that features Mr. Maltin discussing this years Oscar nominees with the former champ... and as expected the results are hysterical.

Next up, we got Tyson taking over for Geoffrey Rush and becoming a speech therapist to George W Bush in a send up of The King's Speech for the Jimmy Kimmel show. This one is great...



Good to see Mr. Mike laughing it all off and having a great time. I am looking forward to seeing him in the upcoming Hangover 2. Stay out of trouble Mike.... and keep up the funny stuff.

Wayne Brady & Mike Tyson Take On Bobby Brown

Yes... that headline JUST HAPPENED! I came across this video about a week ago but I forgot to post it. I was on the floor watching this re-creation of Bobby Brown's classic "Every Little Step" music video that is a figment of Wayne Brady's junk food induced imagination. You gotta love that Iron Mike can have fun and kick it.... it goes against his doom and gloom persona that has haunted him forever. Plus, Wayne Brady is fucking hysterical. Honestly, say what you what about him.... but the dude is absolutely hilarious. You also gotta love the accurate representation of the original dress that Wayne & the crew sported... Mike Tyson is in bike shorts and a tank top with church shoes!!!!

I'm Gonna Knock You Out!!!!

Check out this awesome video by Duane & Brando, which combines cool live action acting with cut scenes from the Nintendo classic Mike Tyson's Punch Out! Mike Tyson Can Do Something Positive...

Its good to hear Mike Tyson's name and not hear something negative attached to it. Iron Mike will be inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame this week, along with Julio Cesar Chavez & Sylvester Stallone, or  as he is known in boxing movie history, Rocky Balboa. I love Iron Mike Tyson despite the fact that he has had many discretion's in his past. His ascent to the heavyweight championship coincided with my childhood, and I remember watching his fights with my Dad like it was yesterday. He was a beast. The youngest heavyweight champion ever. Wow. My dad ordered HBO just so we could watch his fights. It was a cable box that only got HBO... just for his once every 6 month fights!!! Not to mention the awesome boxing game that he top lined for Nintendo. God knows how many hours I spent playing that... So in honor of my favorite fighter, here are his greatest knockouts... congrats Mike. Now don't go out an rape nobody during the celebration... (what... too soon? Its been like 15 years...)

The Fall Of Iron Mike... 20 Years Later

20 years ago today, all of us witnessed the downfall of a superhero... I'm not talking about a fictional hero like Batman or Superman, but a real life superhero. Ok, maybe not a SUPER HERO, but someone just a human with SUPER POWERS... Iron Mike Tyson was no saint prior to his February 11th, 1990 bout with Buster Douglas, but he was remarkable to say the least. It is fair to say that watching him fight was like a watching a fight between a mountain lion and a field mouse. This statement doesn't even do Mr. Tyson justice. Being only 8-11 years old at the time, Mike Tyson's fights on HBO were one of my fondest childhood memories. We didn't even have basic cable, but my father signed us up for HBO - Only service just so we could watch Tyson completely destroy other boxers. He had mowed down everybody who had stepped in his way, from championship contenders to journeymen heavyweights. As hard as I try to remember, I NEVER seen Mike Tyson move backwards in the boxing ring. He was always charging, always leading the onslaught. His strategy wasn't the most sound in boxing, but the fear that he used to instill in his opponents showed you just how effective the strategy was. These guys were pro boxers, the toughest of the tough... and Iron Mike used to beat them like stepchildren all over the ring. It must have been tough to sign a contract to fight Tyson, cause you knew going in that the best case scenario was that you would get knowcked out in the first round. Why would getting knocked out in the first round be a best case scenario??? Because if you made it through the first round, you pissed Tyson off and then he would REALLY want to hurt you as he battered you for the next couple of rounds. He even had his own video game, for christ sake. On Nintendo. This was huge. And then Buster Douglas came along. And just like that...

Words cannot describe the upset that occured in Japan that night twenty years ago. And words can't describe how crushed I was as I sat there on Cohancy St in my house watching my favorite superhuman get smacked around. I could not process the fight in my 11 year old mind, it was like watching Superman get force fed Krytonite. The knockout made me realize that nothing in sports should ever be taken for granted. It also illustrates the point that the more preperation a person puts in, the better the results will be. Tyson took Douglas as a joke, and he was made to look like one. In retrospect, Douglas then followed Tyson down the same path of stupidity. After dethroning the King of the Jungle, what did Douglas do??? He became hollywood, stopped training hard, and got smacked up quick fast by Evander Holyfield, losing the title. He also ballooned to 400 pounds and never was a threat in the heavyweight ranks again. As for Tyson... well, there is no reason to talk about his downfall. Everyone knows his story, and since he was one of my childhood heroes I will leave it at that. If you haven't already seen it, check out the 2009 documentary Tyson. Great film about a great boxer. He might not be a saint, but to a generation of boxing fans watching during the 80's and 90's, no one was better. So congratulations to Buster Douglas on one of the true David and Goliath stories ever... you slayed the giant. It all started 20 years ago today... one of the worst days I have ever had as a sports fan.
