'Thor: The Dark World' Just Keeps Looking Better & Better

One of the biggest surprises of the Marvel Cinematic universe so far has to be the success of Thor. Not the character itself (any character in Avengers would have done well), but the actual ability of the first movie to pull off the mystical elements associated with the character and make it relatable to the real world is nothing short of amazing. Thor took an obscure, not very easy to like character and made him a shining star... and honestly, thank god (or the gods... lol) for that. Chris Hemsworth was born to play this guy, and the supporting cast was quite epic (Rene Russo, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings, and Stellan Skarsgard just to name a few). So after the events of Avengers (which only includes Thor & Loki in the movie, eschewing all of the other characters from the Thor film) we get to return to the world that Kenneth Branagh developed with Thor: The Dark World. This film looks a lot darker, and seems to be filled with a ton of action. We also now have a second trailer, which provides us with a look into the magical world of Asgard and all the wonders that it has to offer. But one thing I have noticed is that we don't see much about the main baddies Malekith the Accursed & Kurse, two of the Dark elves that are going to be Thor's main adversaries. It seems like they are dangling Loki a lot in the trailer in the hope to convince people he is the movies villain and then they will play a switcheroo and have Loki stay true as a good guy (well as good as he can be) and bring the elves on as a surprise. Kinda like they did with the Chitauri and Loki in the Avengers movie (Loki was promoted as the baddie, but the invading alien Chitauri were actually the real big threat). Either way, Thor: The Dark World sure does look like fun and will be an awesome way to end the summer movie season when it comes out in November. Check out the second trailer after the jump...

God bless your heart Reddit. I love that site so much, mostly because of the funny & wild things that people post on there in relation to pop culture. The guys over at One Cool Thing A Day always find... eh...er... well, One Cool Thing A Day (Hence the site name... meh) to feature on their site. A few days back they featured a short film entitled 'Ollie Klublershturf vs The Nazis' by director Skot Bright. The thing that makes this short film special is that Damon Lindelof, (co-creator of Lost) wrote it as a one act play. But he wrote it RIGHT before he had a scheduled meeting with Carlton Cuse (the other co-creator of Lost)... and since Cuse was so impressed with Lindelof's play he agreed to meet him. This script got Lindy in the door with Cuse, and then the two went on to make TV history!!! Bright does an excellent job bringing the story to life with a wonderful cast of actors including Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Norman Reedus (Boondock Saints), Rachel Nichols (GI Joe, Conan Reboot), Samm Levine (Inglourious Bastards), George Seagal (Just Shoot Me) and the wonderful Zach Mills (Super 8) as the child wunderkind Ollie Kluhbershturf! This will be the best 10 minutes of your day....

Thor... Now Thats How You Get A Comic Book Movie Right!!!

Asgard... stunning!

I went to a midnight screening of Thor on Thursday night with my CCD partners in crime Tommy Lombardozzi and Jeff Bond (and my man Jon as well... whatup Jon!!!) and I couldn't be happier. This is what being a geek is all about, no? Late night movies before anyone can ruin it for you by telling you what happens or posting on Facebook about key plot points... if you see it before everyone then you got the advantage. At least that's what I keep telling myself after all these years... but I digress.

The movie was pretty awesome, and I am not one to say something like that lightly. I can honestly say that I can like something without being totally enamored by it. I am definitely not somebody who has to ABSOLUTELY love something in order to give it some credit. Thankfully, Thor was not one of those movies that I had to worry about. I loved it... all 'round loved it! Here are a few reasons why:

• They got the little details right. The Rainbow Bridge leading out of Asgard was stunning. I envisioned them getting this wrong and seeing a huge gaybird bridge... that would have been devastating. The smaller details in a wide sweeping movie like this are what really drive home the point.
• The characters all looked the part. Chris Hemsworth is Thor... shit, I can't see him playing ANYTHING else beside Thor. Portman was believable as a scientist. 'The Warriors Three' looked amazing, very comic book accurate. Future OHC (later this week... your welcome!) Jaime Alexander was stunning as Sif. Rene Russo and Anthony Hopkins were perfect as elder gods. And that brings me to my next point...
• The Frost Giants!!!!!! Amazing... just amazing. They looked creepy as hell, their world was unreal, and that creature that they had chasing Thor & the crew was a CGI masterpiece. Very well done.
• The fight scenes were plentiful and were quite satisfying. Good action... thats what I want from these movies.
• It was funny... these are COMIC books after all. There needs to be some humor in these movies, and Thor finds a way to incorporate humor into the plot without being overlay cheesy. I love the fish-out-of-water portions of the story. Very funny stuff.
• Kat Dennings can still get it, despite the fact they made her look like an early 90's grunge reject... boobies don't lie son!!!
• The helmets rocked... super accurate yet not ridiculous. I always liked Loki's helmet, and they did it just right.
• I loved the 'after the movie' scene... seems to allude to the Capt America movie... looking forward to how it all fits together. 'Cosmic Cube'... yes please!!!

This was an wonderful movie that I couldn't recommend enough. If you are an old fan of Thor or new to the character, this movie is sure to make for some viewing pleasure at the movies. Summer movie season is upon us... comic nerds rejoice!!!

These Two Tentpole Movies Are Shaping Up Nicely...

In the last few days, we have seen the trailers for two of next years most geek related movies. First, we had 'Thor', and now we have 'Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides'. Both looked really good, and despite the fact that we got a long time to wait, and many films coming out before them, I can't help but be super intrigued by them. Here are a few things I liked about each of them.

First, we have The Mighty Thor:

My Thoughts:

1. I love Agent Coulson. He is starting to shape up as a bad ass agent. I am looking forward to him being an integral part of The Avengers Initiative.
2. Asgard looks fantastic... just spectacular.
3. All the armor and helmets look comic book accurate, but not overly ridiculous. Thor's helmet scared that shit out of me... I thought for sure he was gonna look like a dick with a metal helmet and duck wings with feathers on the sides. Definitely not the case.
4. Chris Hemsworth is Thor...'nuff said. Better yet, Thor is playing an actor named Chris Hemsworth on Earth right now.
5. The Frost Giants, The Destroyer Armor, and Loki look fucking amazing. Villains tend to be these comic book adaptations downfall... and this does not look likely here.

Next, 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides'

And now, my thoughts:

1. Captain Jack Sparrow as a prisoner. My favorite scenes from this series always come when Jack is in the capture of someone... and he finds a way to worm out of it.
2. Penelope Cruz... damn son!!!!
3. Blackbeard aka Ian McShane. I was not a huge fan of Deadwood (I know, I know... I am the ONLY one in the world who didn't like it) but I definitely loved every scene McShane was in. He is gangster... and now he will bring that wickedness to the high seas.
4. Dropping Keira Knightley & Orlando Bloom. Those two had a great storyline through three movies, but that was enough. If Disney is going back to the well for a 4th, 5th and 6th film (that's the rumor), then its good they chose to gravitate away from that completed storyline. Maybe Bloom can make a cameo as the captain of  The Flying Dutchman.
5. Mermaids, Zombies and action... oh my!!! These twists look great. Bring it on!!!

Your First Look At Odin and Loki From The Mighty Thor... Awesome!

Here is the first "Official" picture of Anthony Hopkins as Odin and Tom Hiddleson as Loki... also this is the first photo with Chris Hemsworth as Thor holding his hammer, Mjolinir. I am super excited for this movie for many reasons, but let me list my top 3. 1) Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman and the rest of the cast. They really seemed to have got this right on this movie. 2) The armor on the gods from all the pictures that have come from the set look awesome. On a movie like Thor, costumes are going to be REALLY IMPORTANT. To cheesy, and it will suck. These look great!!! 3) Kenneth Branagh, director. I really like Kenneth Branagh as an actor, but I like him even more directing this movie. This story needs to be epic... a cross between Shakespeare and T2: Judgement Day. I think Branagh has enough classical acting training to pull this off. I am really excited for all the material that is sure to be released at San Diego Comic Con next week.
