It's Not My Wrestling, But Damn The WWE Still Put On A Great Event!!!

When I was a child of the 80's I became enthralled with the world of the WWF. I loved wrestling so much that it even eclipsed my love for Star Wars, He Man or any of the other cartoons/movies/toys that I loved as kid. I had all of the hard platic toys, a fake belt... shit I even went to a few Wrestlemania's live in my day!!! but when I hit my late teens/early twenties and started college, I kind have faded away from the whole world of professional wrestling. It is not that the product of the WWF (and later renamed the WWE) had lost its mojo... quite the contrary. It had became more popular than ever. But it just wasn't for me. I know plenty people who stuck with it over the years (whatup Joe Esq!) and I have heard that the product itself has gone up and down over the years... but one thing I never thought would happen would be me being sucked back into the world of professional wrestling. But that is exactly what happened last night, thanks to my 9 year old son Mikey who has become even more obsessed with the sport than I ever was...

Last night I took my son Mikey to his first live WWE event alongside my fiance Tara. It was a taping for Monday Night Raw, and it followed a Pay Per View event on the night before. The atmosphere was electric at the Nassau Coliseum, and it was so cool to see my boy holding up his  hand made sign!!! He was amped... cheering, screaming, laughing... it was just so crazy to see him like that. He was so intense. And then the craziest thing happened...

All of the sudden I WAS TOTALLY DRAGGED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE EVENT!!!!! I was sitting on the edge of my seat, asking my boy questions, and cheering on wrestlers I have never even heard of before (CM Punk? Sheamus? Zack Ryder? Who the fuck are these guys?)! There was even a throwback appearance from Mick Foley, Cyndi Lauper, Wendi Ricter, and Rowdy Roddy Piper... finally, some people I knew!!!! There was The Big Show, Triple H, John Cena... and it all started flooding back. By the time the show ended, I was officially hooked again. Even Tara was hearkening back to her early teenage days when she watched wrestling, loving every second of it! I can't wait to watch more and more wrestling with my boy, and I will begin tuning in again. I am not saying I am all the way back yet... but honestly, being in the arena brought me back to a place that I loved as a kid... and I get to share that with my son now. Yup... I am in.

Even though it was the day after Fathers Day, I can honestly say that I was extremely thankful to have something new (that is really old hat to me) to share with my boy. Very cool. And throughout the night I kept seeing the advertisements for next years Wrestlemania in NY in April 2013.. and boy I can't wait to be in the house for that one. It may not be the WWF that I remember, but it damn sure is some great entertainment!!!!

  1. I LOVED wrestling as a kid. This was before the day of the WWF, Hulk Hogan and that whole tsunami that changed the 'sport' in the 80s. I even bought wrestling magazines and actually cared about who was champ. These are the same magazines which I would then pass to my Baba when she visited us. She was a bigger fan than I was and I have great memories watching the Saturday broadcasts with her. When she passed the family was shocked to find that she had a stack of those magazines squirred away in an old box in her closet. Who knew that Baba had a fetish?
