I have seen some crazy ass Jack-O-Lanterns in my day... some of the scariest ones are full of attention and detail (just see Cal's pumpkin posts from yesterday and later today). But I have never, ever, seen anything that comes close to what Jon Neil created when he decided to take a pairing knife to his gourd of choice. This monster faced pumpkin will leave you with nightmares and have you second guessing pumpkin pie all the way to Thanksgiving! The Shining is one of the creepiest movies ever created, a pure horror classic from the genius mind of Stanley Kubrick. It is one of the first horror movies to cross over to the mainstream and is always on the top of peoples 'Greatest Horror Movies...' lists. One of the things that makes it so spooky for me has to be the look of the characters. When the film starts the three members of the Torrance family seem to be pretty normal... and way I say normal I mean in appearance as well as mental state. But as they spend more and more time at the Overlook Hotel the family begins to unravel in both of those aspects. By the end of the film the characters look horrific and make it even harder for us to ignore the traumatic experiences they have just gone through... Enter sculpture Clare Monaghan and her ability to recreate this haggard look of the Torrances from the end of the film in her busts. These are just so detailed and weird. Check out this awesome Predator sculpture from artist MangaGrasshopper that illustrates the fact that a Predator doesn't back down from any foe,even if it is a T-Rex!!! This sculp is just insane... Make-up effects artist Kevin Kirkpatrick is extremely talented at his job. This dude is really good... so good, that his recreation of MTV's favorite teenage slackers Beavis & Butthead are just as grotesque as you would imagine. Large foreheads, acne, and braces aplenty... these guys would definitely give you the creeps if you encountered them on the streets. Kirkpatrick does a great job making these guys come to life. Artist TranzorZ3D created an awesome Homer Simpson 3-D sculpture awhile back. Recently he decided to use that sculpture of Springfield's finest nuclear plant worker as the basis for a bad ass zombie sculpture that would make Lucio Fulci himself shit his pants (and if you know who that is, then you are my people). The other day we ran a story featuring some cool ass Super Mario sculptures by artist James Van Den Bogart. They were really cool. Now Jeff Bond sent me another artist's version of some of the Super Mario characters. Katan Callaway, takes on Wario, Princess Peach, and Spikey Ball. Very cool.
These are excellent sculptures by artist James Van Den Bogart of some key characters from the Super Mario Brothers universe. These are just visually stunning. Bogart seems to bring out all of the realism of these video game characters. My favorite has to be Shy Guy. He just looks so creepy!!!
One of the coolest moments of the 2010 NYC Comic Con was the day Sam and I happened down a row of Artists Alley and came across the Skelton Crew Studios table. Israel Skelton was there displaying his art... but unlike most of the other artists in the area, his art were not drawings. No, his art was much more 3-D and practical. You see, Israel is a sculptor and he uses his talents to replicate some of his (and ours!!!) favorite weapons and props from the movies and comics. I use the word "replica" lightly... cause these things were no fake versions that just look like the original. Oh no, these things were heavy as shit and sturdy, and I could have probably knocked the shit outta somebody like the Thunder God himself with Skelton's replica Mjolinr (Thor's Hammer). He also had Thunderstrike's mace and Hellboy's gun, The Samaritan, on display. Check out this interview we did with Israel here:
Very cool stuff, and a very cool guy. I especially like the Key replicas he is making from the Locke & Key comic book series. Those books are written by Stephen King's son, Joe Hill, and are critically acclaimed (and fan approved as well!!!). The book series is about to be adapted into a TV show, so stay tuned for more details on that!!!
