Vintage VHS Box Art by Frank Browning For Freddy In Space

I have long extolled Freddy In Space as one of my favorite blogs on the 'Net, and by far one of the best horror blogs around. One reason is because my main man Johnny that runs the site is a gentleman and a scholar... lol. But the other reason is that Johnny embraces his role a s a little guy in a big industry, and he realizes that he can't compete with huge blogs for things like exclusive content and set visits. So he sets out to create some original content that is unique to his blog, and he does this by collaborating with very talented people. One of the people he is working with on some of these projects is Frank Browning. Browning is a very talented artists that creates magnificent retro style art with a very unique touch. So he was the perfect choice by Johnny to create VHS styled boxes for modern horror classics that obviously never have been released in VHS format. This is a really cool concept because one of the coolest aspects of renting videos was definitely browsing the boxes at your local mom & pop video store. I have chosen to watch countless movies through the years based on their VHS box art, so seeing some of my favorite modern horror movies getting the 80s retro box art treatment is fantastic. The thing I love about these has to be the various shots that are highlighted... it is not like modern DVD art that rely on one or two pictures, but rather 6-8 smaller photos that may not be of the most important elements from the movie. Take the Trick 'r Treat box for example, which chooses to highlight vampire Anna Paquin and some of the other lesser known characters on the cover and leaves main attraction Sam for a back of the box shot. I am eagerly awaiting round 2 of these, and Johnny has solicited requests in the comment section for movies we would want to see receive this treatment from Browning. My 3 Favorite Scary Movies Of All Time: Johnny Boots Edition

Ever since that scene in Scream where Ghostface asks Ms Barrymore that same question people have been asking each other it with regularity. Actually, I'm pretty sure they have been asking each other that since the beginning of film itself. Scary movies are just so easy to talk about... and so easy to form an opinion of. For many reasons they are the genre of movies that you can point to and say "Yup, these are the ones I LOVE!!!" In honor of CCD's 1st annual All Horror Week, we decided to highlight some of our contributors and friends 3 favorite scary/horror movies of all time. These may not be the best, but they are each person's FAVORITE, so these lists should be quite fun. Here we go!



Johnny is really a sweet, sweet boy once you get to know 'em...

Johnny Boots runs our favorite horror site of all time, Freddy In Space. Everyday I eagerly wait to see the newest updates in my RSS reader from the twisted world of Johnny's mind to give me the scoop on whats really going on in the ever growing genre of horror. Since this is All Horror Week here at CCD, we figured that there was absolutely no better person to bring on board for an opinion on their favorite scary flicks. So, with no further ado, I bring you the 3 favorite scary movies of Johnny Boots... (pay attention numb-nuts, this guy knows his horror!!!) 

When I think favorite, I think FUN. I love The Shining and The Exorcist and consider them to be two of the best horror films ever made, but that doesn't mean they'd make the cut for a list titled 'My Favorites'. So here are what I consider to be my three FAVORITE horror films of all time, as evidenced by how often I find myself popping them into my DVD player.

Cabin Fever (2002) - This is the single most watched DVD in my collection, one that I've watched an average of at least 10 times per year ever since it was released back in 2003. Though I got the Blu-ray a couple months back, I find myself unable to part with my DVD copy due to the emotional bond I have with it. Whenever I have friends over who are looking to watch a horror movie and whenever I get drunk by myself and want to pop something fun in, Cabin Fever is always the first thing that comes to mind. At this point I've made all my friends watch it on more than one occasion, so I unfortunately only really get to watch it by myself these days!

Friday The 13th Part 4 : The Final Chapter (1984)- Jason Voorhees, Tom Savini, Crispin Glover and Corey Feldman join forces to create what I consider to be the ultimate 80's slasher film. It's fun, it's gory and it's quite simply the personification of the type of horror movie I dig the most.

Hatchet (2002) - Everyone that knows me is probably sick of listening to me suck Hatchet's wanker, but I just cannot seem to stop myself. It's just so much goddamn fun and I really cannot fathom why anyone out there could possibly think otherwise. Two words : JAW RIP! Much like I consider Friday Part 4 the ultimate slasher of the 80's, I just might have to give Hatchet the same honor for the 2000's.
